About Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew

About Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew

All the pleasure of a slice of cake, none of the washing up. Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew puts Britain's favourite tea-time pairing into a single bag.

Underneath it is still Yorkshire Tea, the proper builder's brew, with the Victoria sponge idea folded in. You know the slice. The one on the doily at the village fete, cut slightly too thin by someone who was counting.

It is a cup of tea that remembers afternoons at your nan's, the good plates out and the kettle never quite off.

Forty bags sounds like plenty. Then the office finds out.

Frequently asked questions about Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew

Q: Is this the UK version of Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew?

A: Yes, it is the British box, the same one you would find on a shelf in Leeds. We send it out from Halifax, so it ships from within Canada.

Q: How many teabags are in the box?

A: Forty. Enough for a good run of afternoons, or one very determined weekend.

Q: Does it actually taste like cake?

A: It is named after the Victoria sponge and leans that way, but it is still very much a cup of tea. It does not come with a fork.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses Britain?

A: Very much so. It is light to post, easy to wrap, and it tends to get a laugh before it gets a kettle.

More about Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew

Victoria sponge sits right at the centre of British tea time: the bake sale, the birthday, the tent at the summer show where the judging gets more serious than anyone admits. Yorkshire Tea is the everyday brew in a good share of the country's kitchens. Putting the two together was only ever a matter of time.

In Canada it is the sort of thing people search for after a homesick Sunday afternoon, when the craving is not just for tea but for the whole ritual: pot on, cake out, nobody in a hurry.

It comes as a box of 40 teabags. Keep it sealed, dry and in the cupboard, away from anything strong-smelling, and it will behave. Brew it the way you brew any Yorkshire Tea, give it a proper few minutes, and add milk if that is how your house does it.

People tend to pick it up alongside a box of the everyday Yorkshire Tea, a packet of biscuits for dunking, or the makings of an actual sponge, just to see whether the tea is telling the truth.

The story of Yorkshire Tea Victoria Sponge Brew

The cake tin, minus the tin

Somebody always says they will just have a cuppa, and then the cake comes out anyway. Victoria Sponge Brew skips the negotiation. It has Yorkshire Tea on the box, from Taylors of Harrogate, and if you grew up with a Yorkshire Tea mug going cold on the kitchen side, you know that name before you have read the rest. Victoria sponge is the cake of village fetes, school bake sales and Sunday visits to your nan. Seeing it on a Yorkshire Tea brew feels about right.

Two brothers and a kiosk

It started in 1886 in Harrogate, Yorkshire, with Charles Edward Taylor and his brother trading as C.E. Taylor & Co., blending tea and coffee. They went on to open tea kiosks in Harrogate and Ilkley, which is about as Yorkshire as a business plan gets. In 1962 Bettys, the Yorkshire tea room business founded by Swiss confectioner Frederick Belmont, bought Taylors and renamed it Taylors of Harrogate. A tea room buying a tea merchant. Nobody can have been that surprised.

Still in Harrogate, still family

That 1962 merger created what is now known as the Bettys & Taylors Group, and it remains a privately held, family-run business. Yorkshire Tea, the flagship black tea blend, was launched in 1977 and has become one of the UK's best-known and best-selling tea brands. It is blended from teas grown in countries including Kenya, India and Sri Lanka. The business is still headquartered in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, where it continues to blend and pack its teas. Proper Yorkshire, then.

Kettle on, feet up

Tea in Britain is never really about being thirsty. It is what happens when someone comes round, when the news is bad, when the news is good, when the builders turn up. A brew with a cake in its name just makes the excuse official. Put the kettle on, find the good mug, and if anyone offers you a slice with it, you can tell them you are already sorted.
