About Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding

About Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding

Christmas dinner is not over until somebody turns the lights off and sets fire to dessert. Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding is the thing you set fire to.

It arrives at the table after everyone has sworn they could not manage another bite. Five minutes later the plates are scraped clean and someone is asking where the custard went.

A proper one-pound pudding, enough for a table of family who will all claim they only want a sliver.

It is the UK one, and it ships from within Canada, so a British Christmas in Canada no longer depends on whose suitcase had room.

Frequently asked questions about Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding

Q: How big is it?

A: It is 454g, which is a proper one-pound pudding. Enough for the family table, with a bit left for Boxing Day if somebody behaves.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: For someone who misses a British Christmas, it is hard to beat. It is the one thing they never think to buy themselves, and the first thing they will open.

Q: How do I heat it?

A: Follow the instructions on the pack. Then dim the lights, carry it in slowly, and let everyone pretend they are not impressed.

More about Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding

In Britain the Christmas pudding is the last act of Christmas dinner: the dark, round one carried in with a sprig of holly on top and a blue flame running round the edge. Nobody claims to have room for it. Everybody has some.

Over here, it is the thing people notice is missing in December. The turkey sorts itself out, the crackers turn up somewhere, but the pudding is the bit that makes it feel like home. So people go looking for it, usually right after someone at the table asks whether there is any pudding.

It comes as a one-pound pudding, a good size for a family table with a slice left for Boxing Day if anyone shows restraint. Follow the pack for storing and heating, then turn the lights down and do the bit with the flame.

It rarely travels alone. It tends to land in the basket next to custard, brandy butter, a box of crackers and a tin of chocolates for later, which is how a British Christmas in Canada gets built, one parcel at a time.

The story of Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding

The bit with the matches

Christmas dinner is not over until something is on fire. Lights off, somebody fumbling with the matches, a pudding carried in like the crown jewels while everyone pretends they have room. You have probably missed that moment more than you let on. This one comes from Thursday Cottage, and it is handmade, which is exactly how a British Christmas pudding ought to turn up at the table. Somebody will still ask for just a small bit. They never mean it.

A cottage called Thursday

Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. Yes, the cottage was called Thursday, which beats most house names on most lanes. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. It is now an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade.

Jam people with a warrant

The parent company is Wilkin & Sons Ltd, established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885. They have held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911, and today hold it as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. That is well over a century of keeping the royal toast covered. Somewhere in Essex there is a great deal of fruit that has done its duty.

Small pans, short runs

Thursday Cottage specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, and each boil still produces only about 100 jars. The range runs to a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky and a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, which tells you they have a sense of occasion. Their Amaretto Butter is sold as a twist on traditional brandy butter, so the pudding need never go out on its own.
