About Tango Shocker Bar Apple

About Tango Shocker Bar Apple

The face you pull is half the fun. Tango Shocker Bar Apple is the small bar that made your eyes water outside the corner shop and somehow went straight back on the list the next day.

It carries the Tango name, the fizzy drink with the adverts nobody in Britain has forgotten, and it hits about as hard as they did.

It is pocket money food: small, cheap thrills, eaten on the walk home before anyone could ask for a bite. Find one in Canada and you are suddenly eleven again, wincing and grinning at once.

Frequently asked questions about Tango Shocker Bar Apple

Q: Is this the UK Tango Shocker bar?

A: Yes, it is the British bar, the one from the corner-shop counter, and we ship it from within Canada. No suitcase smuggling required.

Q: How big is it?

A: It is an 11g bar, properly pocket-sized. That is exactly why people buy several.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses Britain?

A: Very. Tuck a few into a parcel of British sweets and watch them pull the face they pulled at eleven.

More about Tango Shocker Bar Apple

Tango Shockers sit in that great British corner of the sweet shelf where the point is the reaction, not the restraint. Bright wrapper, big name, small bar, and a flavour that goes for you rather than with you.

People in Canada go looking for it because nobody else's apple sweet is quite the one they remember. It is a very specific memory: the newsagent, the change counted out in your palm, the dare to eat it in one go.

It is an 11g bar, so it slips into a pocket, a lunchbox or the bottom of a bag without anyone noticing. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard and it waits patiently until the craving turns up, which it will.

It belongs in a mixed bag with other British sweets, the sort you build for a homesick friend or for yourself after a long week. Buy a handful. One bar has never been enough for anyone.

The story of Tango Shocker Bar Apple

You know when you've been Tango'd

Some brands sell you a drink. Tango sold you a slap round the face, and the whole country seemed to enjoy it. So anything with that name on the wrapper was never going to be a quiet little sweet. If you grew up shouting 'You know when you've been Tango'd' across a playground, you already know the attitude, and you know exactly what you are getting into before you open it. The name on the front does the warning for you.

Born in the Rhondda

The firm behind Tango was Corona, founded by two grocers, William Thomas and William Evans, in response to the growing temperance movement. If people were being told to put the beer down, somebody had to sell them something else to pick up. Corona's first factory was in Porth, Rhondda, South Wales, and it grew to 87 depots and factories across Britain. In April 1958 it launched Tango, an orangeade set apart from regular Corona by real fruit and real sugar. By September 1958 the Beecham Group had bought the lot.

The slap heard round Britain

Then came the Orange Man. Created by the agency HHCL, filmed in 1991 and aired in 1992, the advert showed an orange-painted figure slapping a man after he drank Tango. It was the first in the long-running 'You Know When You've Been Tango'd' campaign. It was also withdrawn, after reports that children were copying the slap and injuring each other in school playgrounds. Possibly the most British advertising success there is: so popular it had to be stopped.

Out of the bottle

Beecham sold Tango, Corona and other soft drink brands to Britvic in 1986. Corona itself stopped trading as a brand in the late 1990s, but Tango carried on, and today it is owned and manufactured by Carlsberg Britvic subsidiary Britvic. The range includes real-fruit flavours such as orange, apple, cherry and mango, and the brand has been extended into non-drink products, bonbon sweets among them. Apple, then, is no stranger to the name. Approach with the caution you would give a man painted orange.
