About Moo Free Space Rocks

About Moo Free Space Rocks

Anything called Space Rocks is going to vanish fast. Moo Free Space Rocks are the small British pack that gets opened in the car before you have left the car park.

Moo Free is a proper UK name, and these are the ones people remember from the corner shop and the school trip. If they were part of your childhood, you already know how fast the pack empties.

This is the UK version, and it ships from within Canada. A small bag, a good name, and gone before anyone asks to share.

Frequently asked questions about Moo Free Space Rocks

Q: How big is a pack of Space Rocks?

A: It is a single 35g pack, a small one. Good for a pocket, a lunch box or a quiet moment nobody needs to know about.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: Very. It is small enough to tuck into a parcel with a few other British favourites, and the name alone gets a grin.

Q: Is it just for children?

A: It is aimed at the younger crowd, but plenty of adults buy them and claim otherwise. We do not ask questions.

More about Moo Free Space Rocks

Moo Free has its own corner of the British sweet aisle, sitting somewhere between the after-school stop and the bag tucked into a packed lunch. Space Rocks are the fun end of it, named by someone who clearly remembered being eight.

People in Canada go looking for these because a kid back home asked for them, or because a grown-up did and pretended it was for the kid. The name sticks. So does the memory of the pack being emptied in one go.

It is a single 35g pack, small enough for a pocket, a lunch box or the glovebox. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard away from the sun, and it will sit there quite happily until someone finds it, which will not be long.

It goes well alongside other British sweets in a parcel for someone who misses home, or a handful of small packs for a party bag. One is rarely enough, which is the oldest problem in confectionery.

The story of Moo Free Space Rocks

Small rocks, big questions

A bag called Space Rocks does not need a sales pitch. Hand one to a child and the questions start straight away: are they real, where did they land, can I have the whole bag. The answer to the last one is usually yes, because you are outnumbered and they know it. These come from Moo Free, a family firm in Holsworthy, Devon. That is a long way from orbit, but it is where these particular rocks come down to earth.

It started with Easter eggs

Mike and Andrea Jessop, husband and wife, began in 2008 by making a small number of Easter eggs. They proved so popular that the Jessops were flooded with requests for more. They re-mortgaged their house to fund machinery and ingredients, then spent two years perfecting the recipe. Moo Free officially launched in May 2010. Putting the house on chocolate sounds like a plan made late on a Friday night. It worked, which is more than most Friday night plans can say.

Next door, then abroad

In 2014 they opened a second factory in Holsworthy, right next to the first, to meet rising global demand. In 2016 they won a Queen's Award for Enterprise, after tripling production capacity to supply the US and Chinese markets, and they were exporting to more than 30 countries. Not bad for a couple who started out with a few Easter eggs and a very understanding mortgage adviser.

Still the Jessops, still Devon

For all that, it is still a family business, still led by Mike and Andrea, and it now employs over 60 people in Devon. Back in Britain, the range has been stocked in over 400 Marks and Spencer stores, so plenty of people know the cow on the packet. The bag rattling around in your shopping came out of Holsworthy. Tell whoever is eating them. They will not be listening. They will be eating them.
