About Moo Free Choccy Coins

About Moo Free Choccy Coins

There are always a few chocolate coins in the toe of the stocking. They are found last and eaten first.

Moo Free Choccy Coins are that little bit of a British Christmas morning: a handful of chocolate money, small enough to tuck in anywhere and worth arguing over.

You open one, it is gone in a bite, and the bag is somehow lighter than it ought to be. Nobody has had more than their share. Everybody says so.

Save them for the stocking or hand them round after dinner. They rarely make it to Boxing Day.

Frequently asked questions about Moo Free Choccy Coins

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is: the British Moo Free Choccy Coins, brought over and shipped from within Canada.

Q: How many coins are in the bag?

A: It is a 49g bag. That is a stocking's worth, not a pirate's hoard, so you may want more than one if there are several stockings.

Q: Are they good to send as a gift?

A: Very. They are small, light and easy to slip into a parcel for someone who misses home at Christmas.

More about Moo Free Choccy Coins

Chocolate coins are the loose change of Christmas in Britain. They turn up in stockings, in crackers' general vicinity and in small hands that were told to wait until after lunch. Nobody plans Christmas around them, and yet it does not quite count without them.

In Canada, people go looking for them because they want the stocking to look like the one they had. Parents want their children to find the same coins they found, and grandparents abroad want something small and familiar to post over.

This is a 49g bag of coins, the right amount for one stocking with a few left over for whoever is doing the filling. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, well away from the radiator and the fireplace. They also do a good job in party bags, on the edge of a plate of mince pies, or as bribery on a long car journey.

They sit happily alongside the rest of a UK Christmas haul: a selection box for the morning, a tin for passing round the sofa, and a pudding for later. The coins are the bit that keeps everyone going in between.

The story of Moo Free Choccy Coins

Small change, big deal

Chocolate coins are the currency of Christmas morning. They turn up in the toe of the stocking, hang off the tree, and get gambled away over cards on Boxing Day by an uncle who swears he is not competitive. These ones are made by Moo Free Ltd at its own factories in Holsworthy, Devon, a family firm that knows a thing or two about seasonal chocolate. Unwrapping a chocolate coin without tearing the foil is still a skill. Most of us never mastered it.

They bet the house on it

Mike and Andrea Jessop, husband and wife, started out in 2008 making a small number of Easter eggs. They went down so well that requests came flooding in for an Advent calendar and other products. So the Jessops re-mortgaged their house to pay for machinery and ingredients, spent two years perfecting the recipe, and launched Moo Free in May 2010. The idea was letting children who usually miss out join in the traditional seasonal chocolate occasions, Easter eggs and Advent calendars included. Re-mortgaging the house over chocolate. Brave. Correct, as it turned out.

Still in Devon, still the Jessops

In 2014 Moo Free opened a second manufacturing facility in Holsworthy, right next to the first, to keep up with rising global demand. In 2016 it won a Queen's Award for Enterprise after tripling its production capacity to supply the US and Chinese markets, exporting to more than 30 countries. It has been stocked in over 400 Marks and Spencer stores across the UK. It is still family-run, still led by Mike and Andrea, and now employs over 60 people in Devon. Not bad for a few Easter eggs.

Spend them wisely

Christmas in Canada has plenty going for it, snow included. But a British Christmas has its own small rules, and one of them is that there are chocolate coins somewhere in the house. A few in the stocking. A few on the tree. A few hidden by whoever got to the bag first. If you are building a UK Christmas a long way from home, or sending a Christmas gift to someone who misses it, this is the small change that counts. Nobody has ever saved one for later.
