About Milky Way Advent Calendar

About Milky Way Advent Calendar

December has one rule: one door a day, and nobody opens tomorrow's early. Somebody always does.

The Milky Way Advent Calendar puts the chocolate a lot of us grew up on behind every door, the soft, light bar that got handed out after school and somehow never counted as a proper sweet.

This is the calendar that sat on the windowsill through a British Christmas, its cardboard going soft by the twentieth and its little doors torn clean off the hinge.

If your Christmas in Canada needs a bit of home in it, the first of December is a very good place to start.

Frequently asked questions about Milky Way Advent Calendar

Q: Is this the British Milky Way?

A: It is, the UK version, the soft light bar rather than the one that shares its name in North America. We ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the calendar?

A: It is a 110g calendar, slim and flat enough to stand on a shelf or windowsill without taking over the room.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: Very much so, especially for a British family in Canada with small children, or a grown adult who misses home more than they let on. It is an easy Christmas gift to post to someone a long way from the UK.

More about Milky Way Advent Calendar

In Britain the chocolate advent calendar is as much a part of December as the school nativity. Every big chocolate name has one, and Milky Way has always been the gentle option, the one handed to the youngest in the house.

Over here, the name on the front belongs to a different bar altogether, which is exactly why people come looking. They want the British Milky Way, the one from their own childhood, and they want their kids counting down with it too.

At 110g it is a slim, flat calendar that props up nicely on a shelf, a mantelpiece or the kitchen windowsill. Keep it somewhere cool and dry until December, well away from the radiator, and buy one per child unless you enjoy refereeing.

It sits happily alongside the rest of a UK Christmas haul: selection boxes for Christmas morning, stocking fillers, and the big tin that gets passed round the sofa after dinner. A calendar is just the opening act.

The story of Milky Way Advent Calendar

One door a day, allegedly

Every British December has the same crime scene: three doors open by the first of the month, and nobody owning up. You know the one. The Milky Way Advent Calendar from Mars Limited brings that countdown back for a British Christmas in Canada, when home is a long way off. Hang it somewhere high. It will not help. Somebody will be standing on a chair by the fourth.

A son goes his own way

Forrest Mars Sr. left the American Mars company that his father, Frank C. Mars, had founded. Then he crossed an ocean. In 1932 he set up Mars Limited in Slough, Berkshire, England. Slough is not where most people would start a chocolate story, but there it is. Every child who has ever opened tomorrow's door a day early owes the place a small nod.

Same name, different bar

Here is the bit that wins pub quizzes. The British Milky Way bar launched in 1935, and it is a different product from the American Milky Way. Theirs is closer to what the UK calls a Mars bar. Ours is the lighter one. Same name on both sides of the Atlantic, two different bars, and one very satisfying fact to drop into conversation.

Still in the family

Mars Limited in the UK is part of Mars, Incorporated, a privately held, family-owned American company. Family-owned suits an advent calendar, really, because advent is a family sport. The calendar goes up, the kids negotiate terms, and somebody's door is mysteriously open by breakfast. Everyone denies it. One small door a day, and a lot of whispering about who cheated.
