About Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn

About Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn

The film has not even started and the bag is already half empty. You know exactly who did it.

Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn is the bag from the corner shop and the cinema queue: light, crunchy, salty, and gone a lot faster than anyone planned.

Butterkist is the name most people in Britain think of when they think of popcorn. The salted one is for everyone who never went over to the toffee side and does not intend to start now.

One bag, one person, one film. In theory.

Frequently asked questions about Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn

Q: Is this the British Butterkist?

A: It is, the UK bag you remember, and it ships from within Canada, so there is no waiting on parcels from overseas.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 50g bag, a single helping for one, or a shared one if you are feeling generous. Most people are not.

Q: Is it any good as a gift?

A: For someone who misses home, a bag of Butterkist tucked into a parcel of British snacks goes down very well. It is the small, familiar things that get the biggest reaction.

More about Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn

In Britain, Butterkist sits on the same shelf as the crisps and gets bought the same way: without thinking, on the way to the till, for the sofa or the train home. It is ordinary in the best sense, the snack that was simply always there.

Which is why it gets missed. You can find popcorn anywhere, but a bag of Butterkist means a Friday night in front of the telly in Leeds or Luton, and that is the one people in Canada type into a search bar at eleven o'clock at night.

This is a single 50g bag, a handy size for one person or a very polite pair. It keeps happily in the cupboard until the craving hits, and once it is open it is best finished in one sitting, which has never been a problem for anybody.

People rarely stop at one bag. It goes into the basket alongside a bar of British chocolate, a few packets of crisps and a fizzy drink from home, which is more or less the recipe for a proper night in.

The story of Butterkist Simply Salted Popcorn

The bag that lasts one trailer

You open it during the adverts, swearing you will save some for the film. By the time the lights go down, you are tipping the bag up for the last bits hiding in the corner. Butterkist made its name selling to British cinema audiences, which is why one look at the bag puts you straight back in your seat, feet on the sticky carpet, quietly losing the battle for the armrest. You never did win that one. Nobody does.

Born in Kentucky, of all places

It started with machines, not snacks. Butterkist traces its founding to 1914, when Fred Hoke and James Holcomb, with help from inventor Dan Talbert, started selling popcorn machines in Kentucky, USA, under the Butter-Kist name. Butter-Kist popcorn machines arrived in the UK in 1938, and the brand grew the way you would expect: one cinema audience at a time. After the Second World War, Craven Keiller built a factory in York to supply Butterkist popcorn directly to UK cinema chains. Kentucky's loss.

Passed around, much like the bag

Popcorn this popular was never going to sit still. In 1998 Craven Keiller sold Butterkist to Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which in 2000 merged it into its Monkhill Confectionery subsidiary and moved production to Pontefract, West Yorkshire. In 2017 KP Snacks acquired the business from Tangerine Confectionery, taking on the Pontefract manufacturing site and 140 staff along with it. KP Snacks is a subsidiary of the Intersnack Group, and Butterkist is still produced in Pontefract today.

Still top of the bill

Butterkist marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, and it shows no sign of retiring. As of 2025 it is Britain's best-selling brand of popcorn, which is not bad for a brand that grew up on cinema audiences. These days it is just as likely to turn up on the sofa on a Friday night, handed back and forth until somebody insists they only had a handful. They never only had a handful.
