About Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn

About Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn

The bag is open before the trailers have finished. By the opening credits, somebody is tipping the last crumbs into their palm and pretending it was always that small.

Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn is the one: glazed in toffee, crunchy all the way through, and sticky on the fingers in exactly the right way.

If you grew up in Britain, it was the corner-shop popcorn, the school-trip popcorn, the Saturday-night-telly popcorn. Nobody remembers buying it. Everybody remembers eating it.

This is a bag for one person. In theory.

Frequently asked questions about Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn

Q: Is this the UK version of Butterkist?

A: It is. This is the British Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn, and it ships to you from within Canada.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is the 78g single bag, the one you would grab from a corner shop on the way to the cinema. Enough for one, if nobody is sitting next to you.

Q: Is it good to send to someone who misses Britain?

A: Very. Tuck a bag in with some crisps and chocolate and you have a parcel that gets opened at the door and finished on the sofa.

More about Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn

In Britain, popcorn is as likely to be sweet as salted, and toffee popcorn has its own place on the shelf between the crisps and the chocolate. Butterkist is the bag most people picture when you say the words.

People in Canada go looking for it because of that toffee coating. It is a thin, hard, glassy crunch rather than a soft caramel, and once you have had it as a child, nothing else quite sounds right when you bite down.

It comes in a single 78g bag, which is one film, one long drive or one lunchbox, depending on how disciplined you are. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard and it will wait for you. Once it is open, it will not wait long.

Most people do not stop at one bag. It tends to land in the basket next to a few British crisps, a couple of chocolate bars and a box of proper tea, which is how a quiet night in becomes a small trip home.

The story of Butterkist Crunchy Toffee Popcorn

The bag that never sees the film

You tell yourself you are saving it for the film. The film has not started. The bag is already half gone, and the rustle has pulled every hand on the sofa towards it. Butterkist is the popcorn from the cinema and the corner shop, the bag grabbed on the way home on a Friday. It is still made in Pontefract by KP Snacks, so finding it on a shelf this far from West Yorkshire is a small, very specific kind of joy.

It started in Kentucky, oddly

For a brand this British, the story begins somewhere unexpected. In 1914 Fred Hoke and James Holcomb started selling popcorn machines in Kentucky, USA, under the Butter-Kist name. The machines arrived in the UK in 1938, and the brand grew exactly where you would want popcorn to grow: through sales to cinema audiences. After the Second World War, Craven Keiller built a factory in York to supply Butterkist popcorn directly to UK cinema chains. Popcorn and the pictures, sorted.

From York to Pontefract

Butterkist grew into the UK's leading popcorn brand, and the paperwork followed. In 1998 Craven Keiller sold it to Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which in 2000 merged it into its Monkhill Confectionery subsidiary and moved production to Pontefract, West Yorkshire. In 2017 KP Snacks acquired the Butterkist popcorn business from Tangerine Confectionery, including the Pontefract site and 140 staff. KP Snacks is part of the Intersnack Group. Plenty of owners over the years. The bag in your hand still comes from Pontefract.

A century old and still winning

Butterkist marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, and as of 2025 it is Britain's best-selling brand of popcorn. Not bad for a name that started out on popcorn machines in Kentucky. It is the Friday night film on the sofa, the long coach trip, the emergency cupboard snack that never survives until an actual emergency. Somebody always says they only want a handful. Nobody has ever only wanted a handful. You know exactly how this goes. Open it anyway.
