About Bonds of London Wine Gums

About Bonds of London Wine Gums

There is always one colour you save for last, and there is always someone who eats it while you are not looking. Bonds of London Wine Gums, back in your hand where they belong.

A proper wine gum is the sort of thing you forget about for years, then suddenly want very badly. Long car journeys. The cinema. The bag in the glovebox that was strictly for emergencies.

In theory this bag is for sharing. In practice it is a bag for one, plus a lot of careful denial about where they all went.

Frequently asked questions about Bonds of London Wine Gums

Q: Are these the UK wine gums?

A: They are: Bonds of London Wine Gums, the British ones, and we ship them from within Canada. No suitcase smuggling required.

Q: How big is the bag?

A: It is a 120g bag. Enough to share, if you are a better person than most of us.

Q: Are they good to send to someone who misses British sweets?

A: Very. A bag of wine gums tucks neatly into a parcel for anyone homesick for the newsagent counter, and it tends to get a bigger reaction than its size suggests.

More about Bonds of London Wine Gums

Wine gums sit right at the heart of the British sweet shop, next to the jars and the pick and mix, bought with pocket money at the newsagent on the way home from school. They are the slow sweet, the one you chew while the rest of the bag disappears around you.

Nobody in Canada searches for wine gums on a whim. It is a craving with a very specific memory attached: a particular chew, a particular bag, a particular back seat on a particular motorway. You know exactly what you want, and you want that one.

They come in a 120g bag, small enough for a coat pocket and big enough to last a film if you are disciplined (you will not be). Fold the top over and it sits happily in the cupboard, the desk drawer or the glovebox until the next emergency.

People rarely stop at one bag of British sweets. Wine gums tend to end up in the basket with a bar of chocolate, a packet of crisps and a box of tea, which together make a very respectable afternoon.

The story of Bonds of London Wine Gums

The jar behind the counter

Wine gums were the sweet you were trusted with before you were trusted with anything else. A paper bag from the corner shop, a quarter weighed out, and a long negotiation over who got the last one. Bonds of London made its name on exactly that sort of sweet, the kind that lived in a big jar behind the counter. Their wine gums sit among the retro classics the firm is best known for, right next to the sherbet lemons. You know the ones. You have probably chewed through a whole car journey on them.

Old sweets, new owners

When Bonds of London changed hands in April 2016, the trade press described it as one of the UK's oldest sweet businesses. The buyer was Innovative Bites, a US-foods wholesaler founded in 2008 by Vishal Madhu, and it was a multimillion-pound deal. Madhu said Bonds had historically been known for traditional British sweets such as pick'n'mix jars and hanging bags. In other words, the stuff you spent your pocket money on, by the handful, while pretending you were only looking.

Same hands on the wheel

Plenty of old firms get bought and quietly lose the plot. Bonds kept its managing director, Philip Courtenay-Luck, who stayed on after the 2016 acquisition. Then Innovative Bites kept going: a year after buying Bonds, it acquired pick'n'mix wholesaler Hancocks Cash & Carry in a deal worth about £100m. That is a serious amount of money spent by people who take sweets seriously. Good. Somebody has to.

Where wine gums actually live

Wine gums are not a sweet you eat once. They live in the glovebox, the coat pocket, the desk drawer at work that everyone knows about. They come out at the cinema and on long drives, and they are shared with exactly the right amount of reluctance. The bag goes round once politely. After that, you start counting. Somebody will swear they only had two. They did not.
