About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free

About Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free

Simpkins citrus ginger drops are the sort of British sweet that turns up in a handbag, a glove box, or on a side table at someone's parents' house, and nobody ever questions it. This is the sugar free version, arriving in Canada in the same recognisable Simpkins tin that has been doing the rounds on British shelves for a very long time.

The Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free tin contains hard drops with a citrus flavour and a ginger note, packaged in a 175g tin imported from the United Kingdom. The format is classic Simpkins: a proper hinged tin rather than a bag, which is part of the point.

For British expats in Canada, Simpkins tins occupy a specific corner of memory, somewhere between the newsagent counter and the bowl on your grandparents' coffee table. The Great British Shop stocks them so you are not waiting on a parcel from home or hoping a visiting relative remembers to pack one.

The citrus ginger flavour sits in the sharper end of the Simpkins range, with the ginger giving it a bit more character than a straight fruit drop. If you are after something with a bit of warmth alongside the citrus, this is the tin for that.

Frequently asked questions about Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free

Q: What do Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free drops taste like?

A: Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free drops have a sharp citrus flavour with a ginger note, sharpened further by citric acid in the recipe. They are hard boiled drops in the classic Simpkins style, so the flavour builds as you go rather than hitting all at once. The combination of bright citrus and warm ginger makes them a bit more interesting than a straight fruit drop, which is probably why people keep a tin somewhere sensible and revisit it.

Q: Do Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free drops contain any sugar?

A: The nutritional panel lists sugars at 0.0g per 100g. The drops are sweetened with isomalt and sucralose rather than sugar, which is how Simpkins achieves the sugar free label. The carbohydrate content is 98g per 100g, all of which comes from polyols. The tin itself notes that less than 25g of polyols per day is advisable, as excessive consumption may cause a laxative effect, so they are best enjoyed in modest amounts rather than all at once.

Q: Are Simpkins sweets made in the UK?

A: Yes, Simpkins sweets are made in Sheffield, England, and this 175g tin is a genuine British import. Simpkins is one of those old-fashioned confectionery names that still comes in a proper tin rather than a foil bag, which is part of the appeal for people in Canada who remember them from newsagents and corner shops. For British expats ordering groceries from Canada, the tin is as recognisable as the sweets inside it.

More about Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free

Simpkins Citrus Ginger Sugar Free sits within a long British tradition of travel sweets: hard-boiled drops sold in tins or bags, designed to be passed around on long journeys or kept quietly in a coat pocket. The sugar-free format puts it in a smaller, genuinely useful corner of that category, where flavour is doing real work without the sugar to lean on.

For Canadians who grew up in the UK, sugar-free British sweets are a surprisingly hard thing to replace. The citrus and ginger combination is particular to the British confectionery palate, and it is the kind of thing people search for once they realise nothing in the local pharmacy aisle quite fills the gap.

The 175g bag is a sensible pantry size: not so large it feels like a commitment, not so small it disappears in a week. It keeps well in a cupboard, travels without fuss, and is the sort of thing worth having around for long car journeys or an afternoon at a desk.

Simpkins makes a range of travel sweets across various flavours and formats, including other sugar-free options. If this one appeals, the broader Simpkins range in Canada is worth a look, as is the wider selection of British sweets available on the site.

The bag ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Halifax, Toronto, Burlington or Montreal, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel or paying international postage on something that weighs less than a paperback.
