About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Sarsons Brown Malt Vinegar

About Sarsons Brown Malt Vinegar

There are certain bottles that belong in a British kitchen the way a kettle does, and Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar is firmly one of them. Made in the United Kingdom and available here in Canada without waiting on a suitcase or a slow parcel, this is the malt vinegar people mean when they say malt vinegar.

The 300ml bottle contains Sarson's classic brown malt vinegar, the one with that deep, rounded, malty tang that has been doing its job on fish and chips for longer than most people care to calculate. It is not subtle, and it is not trying to be. It goes on chips, it goes in pickling liquor, it goes into dressings and marinades, and it makes a chip butty taste correct.

For British expats, this is the bottle that lived next to the salt on every table, at every chippy, at your nan's house and probably at the school canteen. The Great British Shop stocks it precisely because there is a very specific flavour memory attached to Sarson's that no other vinegar quite replicates, and people notice the difference.

Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar is suitable for vegetarians and is dairy-free, which makes it an easy reach for most households. At 300ml it is a practical size that fits the cupboard without taking over a shelf, though if you go through it at any reasonable British pace, you will probably want to stock a couple.

Frequently asked questions about Sarsons Brown Malt Vinegar

Q: What does Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar taste like?

A: Sarson's has a rich, malty tang that sets it apart from clear spirit vinegars or white wine vinegars. That depth comes from the barley malt vinegar and barley malt extract it is brewed from, giving it a rounded, slightly bitter edge that works particularly well splashed over fish and chips. It is the kind of vinegar that smells like a British chippy the moment you open the bottle, which is either very appealing or very specific, depending on who you are.

Q: Is Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar is suitable for vegetarians and is also dairy-free. It contains barley malt vinegar and barley malt extract, so it does contain gluten from barley, which is worth noting for anyone with a gluten intolerance or coeliac condition. Beyond that, it is a straightforward two-ingredient condiment brewed in Manchester.

Q: Is this the UK version of Sarson's Malt Vinegar, brewed in Britain?

A: Yes, this is the genuine UK product, brewed in Manchester. Malt vinegar is widely available in Canada, but the Sarson's name carries a specific weight for anyone who grew up with it on the table at a British chippy or in a family kitchen. It is the bottle people remember, and for British expats in Canada, that familiarity is usually the whole point of ordering it.

More about Sarsons Brown Malt Vinegar

Sarson's Brown Malt Vinegar sits in a specific corner of the British pantry: brewed condiments with a job to do. Malt vinegar of this style is made by fermenting barley malt, which gives it that characteristic dark colour and rounded sharpness that spirit vinegar simply does not replicate. It belongs in the same cupboard conversation as Henderson's Relish, HP Sauce and Worcestershire sauce, the bottles that do quiet, consistent work rather than announcing themselves.

For British expats across Canada, malt vinegar tends to be one of those small but stubborn gaps. Canadian supermarkets carry vinegar, of course, but the brown malt variety with this particular depth is rarely stocked, which is why people search specifically for Sarson's rather than a generic substitute. The memory attached to it is quite precise.

The 300ml bottle is a practical size: easy to store, sealed with a screw cap, and happy on a cool, dry shelf for a good while once opened. It is vegetarian-suitable and dairy-free, which covers most household needs without any fuss. The bottle is also light enough to ship without drama.

Sarson's produces a range of vinegars beyond the brown malt, including malt, white wine and pickling varieties. If you are stocking a British kitchen from scratch, the full Sarson's range in Canada is worth a look alongside other British pantry favourites.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether the bottle is heading to a kitchen in Fredericton, Montreal or Halifax, it arrives without the overseas parcel wait or the customs lottery that comes with it.
