About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran

About Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran

Scottish porridge oats with added bran is not the most glamorous thing to be excited about, but if you grew up with a proper bowl of porridge on a cold morning, Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran is exactly the sort of bag that makes breakfast feel like it has been taken seriously.

This 750g bag combines Scottish porridge oats with 10% wheatbran, which gives the finished bowl a little more body and a slightly more distinctive flavour than plain oats alone. It is a straightforward product that does what it says, and it is also the kind of thing that earns its place in the cupboard well beyond breakfast. Flapjacks, oat biscuits and fruit crumbles all benefit from a bag like this sitting around.

For British expats in Canada looking for the real thing, The Great British Shop imports Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran directly from the UK, which means no hunting through an international aisle hoping for the best and no waiting on a parcel from abroad. It is the genuine UK version, available to order online and shipped from within Canada.

Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran is suitable for vegans and vegetarians and is dairy-free, which makes it a useful staple for a fairly wide range of households. The 750g bag is a practical size for regular use, and the oats themselves are Scottish, which is rather the point with a product like this.

Frequently asked questions about Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran

Q: What is the difference between Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran and regular porridge oats?

A: Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran contains 10% wheatbran blended with Scottish porridge oats, which gives the finished bowl a slightly more substantial, earthy quality compared to plain rolled oats. The bran adds texture and means the oats do a bit more work nutritionally, with 13.7g of fibre per 100g. It is the same format as standard porridge oats but with a more distinctive character that regular oats do not quite replicate.

Q: Are Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran suitable for vegans?

A: Yes, Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and is also dairy-free. The ingredients are simply Scottish porridge oats and wheatbran, so it works equally well made with water, plant-based milk or dairy milk depending on preference. The one allergen to note is wheat, which comes from the wheatbran component.

Q: What else can Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran be used for besides porridge?

A: Beyond a morning bowl, Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran works well in biscuits, flapjacks and fruit crumbles, which is one reason a 750g bag tends to disappear faster than expected. The wheatbran content gives baked goods a slightly more textured result than plain oats alone. It is the sort of Scottish pantry staple that earns its cupboard space by doing several jobs rather than just one.

More about Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran

Hamlyns Scottish Porridge Oats and Bran sits within a specific corner of the British cereal aisle: proper milled Scottish oats, made in Scotland, sold in a no-fuss bag that has been a fixture of British breakfast cupboards for generations. It belongs to the broader category of UK pantry staples that Canadians tend to miss most, partly because the texture and milling style of Scottish oats is genuinely its own thing, and partly because porridge made this way is tied to a particular kind of morning ritual.

For British expats in Vancouver or Calgary, finding the right porridge oats is one of those small but surprisingly important things. Canadian rolled oats are widely available and perfectly good, but for someone whose porridge memory is specifically Scottish, the Hamlyns version carries a different weight, and that is what tends to drive the search.

The 750g bag is a sensible pantry size: enough to last a few weeks of regular breakfasts, compact enough to store easily, and happy in a cool, dry spot or decanted into an airtight container once opened. It is vegan, vegetarian and dairy-free, which makes it a straightforward fit for most households.

Hamlyns produces a small, focused range of Scottish oat products. You can browse the full Hamlyns range in Canada or explore wider British pantry favourites if you are restocking more than just breakfast.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Fredericton or Calgary, the bag arrives without the delays and customs uncertainty of an overseas parcel. Useful, given that porridge waits for no one.
