About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Savoursmiths Italian Cheese & Port

About Savoursmiths Italian Cheese & Port

There is a particular type of crisp that does not belong in a lunchbox or at the bottom of a school bag, and Savoursmiths Italian Cheese & Port is firmly in that category. This is a British crisp built around a flavour combination that sounds like it belongs on a cheeseboard, which is more or less exactly where it is happiest.

The 40g bag brings together the richness of Italian cheese with the mellow, rounded sweetness of port. The result is the kind of flavour that makes a Friday evening feel slightly more considered than it actually is. Savoursmiths are a UK brand with a clear point of view about what a crisp can be, and this flavour makes that case well.

For British expats in Canada, Savoursmiths is the sort of brand that tends to prompt a very specific kind of recognition, usually followed by mild surprise that it is actually available here. The Great British Shop imports these directly from the UK, so there is no need to engineer a care package or hope someone remembers to pack them.

These crisps are confirmed gluten-free, which makes them a useful option when you want something that does not compromise on flavour to get there. The Italian Cheese & Port flavour sits at the more grown-up end of the Savoursmiths range, though the brand has a broader lineup worth exploring if this one lands well.

More about Savoursmiths Italian Cheese & Port

Savoursmiths sits in a corner of the British crisp market that takes flavour seriously, pairing ingredients more commonly found on a wine list or cheeseboard than in a snack aisle. The Italian Cheese & Port variety is a good example of how the brand approaches things: a flavour combination with some actual thought behind it, rather than a seasoning powder that vaguely gestures at something savoury.

For Canadians who spent time in the UK, or who have family sending wish lists back across the Atlantic, Savoursmiths tends to be one of those names that surfaces when people search for British crisps in Canada that go beyond the expected. The Italian Cheese & Port flavour in particular is the kind of thing that is genuinely hard to find a close substitute for locally.

The 40g bag is a single-serve size, neat for a desk drawer, a carry-on, or a drinks occasion where something more interesting than a bowl of peanuts is called for. It is also confirmed gluten-free, which is useful to know. Store in a cool, dry place and the bag keeps well without any fuss.

The full Savoursmiths range available in Canada includes other flavour combinations worth exploring, and they sit naturally alongside the broader selection of British crisps and snacks stocked here.

Whether the bag is heading to someone in Montreal, making up part of a British grocery order in Toronto, or landing on a coffee table in Halifax, it ships from within Canada rather than arriving battered from overseas.
