About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Savoursmiths Bubbly & Serrano Chilli

About Savoursmiths Bubbly & Serrano Chilli

Savoursmiths Bubbly & Serrano Chilli is the sort of British crisp that raises an eyebrow before you have even opened the bag. Chilli heat and a sparkling wine-style fizz, together, on a potato. Made in England, and available here in Canada without any suitcase logistics required.

Each 40g bag is a single serving of potato crisps flavoured with serrano chilli, bubbly fizz and sea salt. The combination sounds like it was invented at a party and then, to everyone's mild surprise, turned out to work rather well. The heat is present, the fizz is real, and the sea salt keeps everything grounded.

Savoursmiths sits at the more considered end of the British crisp market, which is saying something given how seriously the British take crisps. The Great British Shop stocks them in Canada for anyone who finds the standard supermarket crisp aisle a bit uneventful and would rather not wait on a parcel from the UK to get something with a bit more going on.

These crisps are gluten-free, which makes them worth noting for anyone shopping around dietary requirements. They are made in England using UK-grown potatoes and sunflower oil, and come in a 40g bag that fits neatly alongside a broader British grocery order.

More about Savoursmiths Bubbly & Serrano Chilli

Savoursmiths sits within a small corner of the British crisp market that takes flavour combinations seriously, pairing unexpected ingredients rather than reaching for the usual cheese or prawn cocktail. The Bubbly & Serrano Chilli flavour brings together sparkling wine notes and serrano chilli heat on a potato crisp base, finished with sea salt. It is the kind of thing that sounds experimental until you try it.

For Canadians who spent time in the UK, or who have family sending wish lists across the Atlantic, British crisps occupy a specific nostalgic space that no direct local substitute quite fills. Savoursmiths in particular tends to appear on those lists because the flavours are harder to replicate and easier to miss.

Each bag is 40g, which is a standard single-serve size, and confirmed gluten-free. It stores easily in a cool, dry cupboard, which makes it practical for gifting or stocking up. The format also means it travels well within Canada without any particular fuss.

Savoursmiths produces several other flavours worth exploring alongside this one. The full Savoursmiths range available in Canada is stocked here, and it sits naturally within the broader British crisps and snacks selection if you are building out a proper snack cupboard.

Orders ship from within Canada, so whether you are in Toronto, Halifax, Oshawa or Moncton, there is no waiting on an overseas parcel or paying international postage for a 40g bag of crisps.
