Halifax, this one took longer than it should have.

For years, we have heard some version of the same question across the counter:

“Can you get Brennan’s sausages?”

Until now, our answer usually involved an apology and some vague optimism. Today, it involves directions to the freezer.

Brennan’s Irish Food Products and the Celtic Gourmet range have arrived at The Great British Shop in Halifax. If you have been trying to find Irish pork bangers, rashers, black pudding or white pudding in Nova Scotia, breakfast is finally back on the cards.

The Irish breakfast Halifax has been asking for

To anyone who grew up with a full Irish, these are not simply five more products in a freezer. They are the sound of a busy pan on a Sunday morning, the kettle already on, and somebody asking how many sausages you want as though there is a sensible answer.

Food has a habit of doing that. One familiar breakfast can turn an ordinary morning in Halifax into a kitchen you remember from years ago and thousands of kilometres away.

What has arrived?

The range covers the part of the plate that eggs and toast cannot manage on their own.

There are Celtic Gourmet Traditional Pork Bangers and Cocktail Pork Bangers, both in 450 g packs. The pudding question is answered twice, with Traditional Black Pudding and Traditional White Pudding in 300 g packs. Then there is Celtic Gourmet Rashers & Cured Pork, the 250 g product previously sold as Brennan’s Irish Bacon.

Those are the five lines we have now. Traditional bangers for the breakfast plate. Cocktail bangers for a smaller bite. Rashers for the person who has spent years explaining that streaky bacon is not quite what they meant. Black pudding, white pudding, or both, depending on how firmly held the household opinions are.

For the person who has asked us about white pudding every few months: yes, we finally have it.

Why do some packs say Brennan’s and others say Celtic Gourmet?

Many Canadian customers first knew these products by the Brennan’s name. The Canadian range is now being brought together under Celtic Gourmet, so you may see Brennan’s packaging beside Celtic Gourmet packaging while that change takes place.

That means you do not have to rely on an old packet photograph or somebody’s cousin remembering the label. There is a clear place to check.

Putting a full Irish breakfast together

There is no single plate that every family, county or kitchen agrees on. That is part of the charm and, occasionally, the argument.
