About Warburtons Wholemeal Bread

About Warburtons Wholemeal Bread

The brown half of the Warburtons bread bin. Soft wholemeal, sliced, from the Bolton bakers who have been at this since 1876.

It does everything the white loaf does, toast, sandwiches, something under poached eggs, while letting you feel mildly sensible about it.

More about Warburtons Wholemeal Bread

Warburtons started as a Bolton grocery shop in 1870 and switched to baking in 1876 when Ellen Warburton decided bread would sell better than groceries. It did. The firm is still family-run and still in Bolton.

If you are searching for Warburtons wholemeal in Canada or soft British brown bread, this is the one.

The story of Warburtons Wholemeal Bread

A grocery shop that changed its mind

Thomas and Ellen Warburton opened a grocery shop on Bow Street in Bolton in 1870. In 1876, with the grocery trade struggling, Ellen started baking bread to sell instead, and it went well enough that the shop became a bakery. That decision is the company.

Warburtons has stayed a family firm ever since, still based in Bolton, and grew into one of the biggest names in British baking without ever really leaving home. In much of the north of England the name on the wrapper is simply what bread is called.
