About Warburtons Toastie White Bread

About Warburtons Toastie White Bread

Warburtons Toastie is the thick sliced white loaf a large part of Britain was raised on. If toast has felt slightly wrong since you moved to Canada, there is a fair chance this is the missing part.

The slices are cut thick on purpose. That is what makes it a Toastie: enough structure out of the toaster to carry butter properly, hold a fried egg, or stand up to beans without going soft in the middle.

More about Warburtons Toastie White Bread

Warburtons has been baking in Bolton since 1876 and is still a family firm. British sliced white is its own category of loaf, and the Toastie is the thick end of it, bought for toast rather than sandwiches.

If you are searching for Warburtons Toastie in Canada or proper British bread, this is the loaf people mean.

The story of Warburtons Toastie White Bread

A grocery shop that changed its mind

Thomas and Ellen Warburton opened a grocery shop on Bow Street in Bolton in 1870. In 1876, with the grocery trade struggling, Ellen started baking bread to sell instead, and it went well enough that the shop became a bakery. That decision is the company.

Warburtons has stayed a family firm ever since, still based in Bolton, and grew into one of the biggest names in British baking without ever really leaving home. In much of the north of England the name on the wrapper is simply what bread is called.
