About Toblerone Advent Calendar

About Toblerone Advent Calendar

December has properly started when somebody opens tomorrow's door by mistake. The Toblerone Advent Calendar makes that mistake worth it.

Toblerone was always the Christmas chocolate: the bar in the toe of the stocking, the one under the tree, the one grabbed at the airport on the way home for whoever was picking you up. Now it gets a door a day for the whole countdown.

It is the UK version, and it ships from within Canada, so a British Christmas in Canada can start on the first of December, as it should.

Who gets to open the last door is for your family to sort out. We are staying well out of it.

Frequently asked questions about Toblerone Advent Calendar

Q: How big is it?

A: It is a 204g calendar, flat enough to stand on a shelf or mantelpiece without taking it over. Big enough for a proper countdown, small enough that nobody has to move the Christmas cards.

Q: Does it make a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: It does, and it keeps giving every morning for the whole of December. Send it early, though, because an Advent calendar that turns up on the fifth starts the month already behind.

Q: How does it arrive?

A: We pack it carefully so the doors stay shut and the corners stay square. What happens to the doors after that is your business.

Q: When should we start opening it?

A: The first of December, one door a day, through to Christmas Eve. Opening two at once is technically allowed, but you will hear about it later.

More about Toblerone Advent Calendar

In a British house, the Advent calendar is part of the furniture from the first of December. It goes on the mantelpiece or the kitchen windowsill, and one door gets opened every morning before school, before work, before anyone has even put the kettle on.

People in Canada go looking for this one because it is the one from home. The shape is familiar, the triangles are familiar, and handing it to your own kids on the first of December feels a lot like being one again.

It is a 204g calendar that stands up on its own on a shelf or a sideboard. Keep it somewhere cool, away from the radiator and the wood stove, and ideally out of reach of anyone who thinks the doors are a suggestion rather than a rule.

It tends to go home in the same bag as the rest of the Christmas run: a UK selection box for Christmas morning, a tin for passing round after dinner, a few stocking fillers. A countdown first, then the main event.

The story of Toblerone Advent Calendar

December, one door at a time

Somewhere in your childhood there is a Toblerone, usually bought at an airport and snapped at an angle nobody intended. This advent calendar takes that triangle and spreads it across December, one door a morning, before school or before the kettle has boiled. It is a British Christmas habit with a Swiss passport, and nobody ever minded. If you are counting down to Christmas in Canada, a long way from home, this does the counting for you, and it never needs reminding.

A shop in Bern, then a factory

Jean Tobler owned his own confectionery shop in Bern, Switzerland, from 1868, producing chocolate confectionery from products supplied by other manufacturers. Then demand did what demand does. In 1899 he founded a chocolate factory of his own, the Fabrique de Chocolat Berne, Tobler & Cie. In 1908 Emil Baumann created the recipe, and his cousin Theodor Tobler devised the triangular shape and the packaging. The Matterhorn is commonly believed to have inspired that shape, which you cannot unsee once someone points it out.

A name, a patent, a few owners

The name joins Tobler's surname with the Italian word torrone. Toblerone is considered the world's first patented milk chocolate bar, a handy fact to bring up when someone opens a door that is not theirs. The company was independent from 1899 until 1970, then merged with Suchard, then with Jacobs as Jacobs Suchard, before Kraft Foods (renamed Mondelez International) acquired it in 2012. That is a lot of signatures on one triangle.

Bern, the airport, the stocking

Toblerone has been produced in Switzerland since 1908 and is exported from Bern to 120 countries and to 500 airports, which explains a lot. Mondelez has been moving some manufacturing to Slovakia, so some bars lose the 'Swiss' label and the Matterhorn outline on the packaging. For plenty of Brits it was the present grabbed at the gate, or the bar wedged sideways into a stocking. An advent calendar simply means you get one every morning, and you can stop pretending it is for the kids.
