About Bonds of London Giant Strawbs

About Bonds of London Giant Strawbs

The pick 'n' mix had a pecking order, and the giant strawberries sat right at the top of it. Bonds of London Giant Strawbs are exactly those, a whole bag of them, no paper scoop and no queue.

Big, strawberry-shaped and unapologetically strawberry-flavoured, they are the sweet you meant to have one of. Then it was eight.

These are the UK bag, and they ship from within Canada, so nobody has to squeeze them into a suitcase on the way back.

Open them at your desk and watch how quickly you make friends.

More about Bonds of London Giant Strawbs

Bonds is one of those names that lives on the shelf behind the newsagent's till, next to the jars and the chews. Giant Strawbs are the sort of sweet a British childhood was measured in: pocket money spent, bag emptied before you got home.

People search for them by name because the name is the memory. You can describe them to a friend over here all you like, but until they are holding one, "giant strawbs" just sounds like someone bragging about their allotment.

A 130g bag is a decent handful for sharing, or a quiet evening for one if nobody is watching. Fold the top over, keep it somewhere cool and dry, and they will wait for you, though rarely for long. They turn up in lunchboxes, on film nights and in the glovebox for long drives.

They sit happily with the rest of the old-school sweet shelf, so most people end up building their own pick 'n' mix: a bag of these, something fizzy, something chewy, and a solemn promise to share.

The story of Bonds of London Giant Strawbs

The name on the bag

Some sweets you remember by the name on the bag, and Bonds of London Giant Strawbs is not a name that hides behind modesty. You know the moment. A handful of change, a corner shop, five minutes of very serious thought, and a bag that was meant to last the walk home but barely made it to the end of the road. You have moved a long way from that road since. The bag has finally caught up with you.

Old jars, older habits

When Bonds of London changed hands in 2016, the trade press described it as one of the UK's oldest sweet businesses. That tracks. Bonds of London has historically been known for traditional British sweets such as pick'n'mix jars and hanging bags, and its best-known jars include retro classics such as sherbet lemons and wine gums. If you ever stood on tiptoe at a sweet shop counter saying "that one, no, that one", you know exactly the sort of jar we mean.

New owners, same managing director

In April 2016, Bonds of London was bought by Innovative Bites, a US-foods wholesaler, in a multimillion-pound deal. Innovative Bites was founded in 2008 by Vishal Madhu, which makes the buyer a good deal younger than the business it bought. Managing director Philip Courtenay-Luck stayed on after the acquisition. A year later, Innovative Bites went on to acquire pick'n'mix wholesaler Hancocks Cash & Carry in a deal worth about £100m. Somebody there clearly likes sweets as much as you do.

The bag nobody admits to finishing

A bag of sweets in a British house has a short and predictable life. It gets opened for just the one, passed round during the film, and found empty on the arm of the sofa with nobody owning up. This bag will go the same way. The only difference is that this time you are the one who has to explain where it went, so you might want to hide it.
