About Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube

About Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube

Every stocking has a lumpy bit down at the toe. In a lot of British houses, that lump was a tube of Smarties.

The Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube is the Christmas one, dressed up as a reindeer and a good deal bigger than anything that ever turned up in your packed lunch.

Tip a few into your hand and you will eat them in colour order. You always did. Nobody tells you to, it just happens.

It is a small taste of a UK Christmas, the kind you hand over on Christmas morning when home is a long way off.

Frequently asked questions about Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube

Q: Is this the UK version of Smarties?

A: It is. This is the British tube, brought over to our shop in Halifax and shipped from within Canada.

Q: How big is the giant tube?

A: It holds 120g of Smarties, a good bit more than the standard tube. Enough for a sofa full of people, if they behave.

Q: Is it a good stocking filler or gift?

A: It is about as classic a stocking filler as a British childhood gets. For someone who misses home at Christmas, it says the right thing without you having to.

Q: How does it arrive?

A: It is packed up and sent from our shop in Nova Scotia, so it travels within Canada rather than across the Atlantic.

More about Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube

Smarties sit right in the middle of British sweet-shop memory: little chocolate beans in a coloured shell, rattling about in a tube. Ask anyone who grew up in the UK and they can tell you which colour they saved for last.

People in Canada come looking for this one because they want the tube from home, the one with the UK packaging they remember from their own stocking. Finding it over here makes a British Christmas in Canada feel a bit more like the real thing.

The giant tube holds 120g, which is enough to share in theory and rarely shared in practice. Keep it somewhere cool and dry and it will sit happily in the cupboard until it is needed. It slips into a stocking, goes on the table after dinner, or gets emptied over the top of a cake by someone who cannot wait.

It tends to go in the basket alongside the other British sweets people miss, the chocolate bars, the selection boxes and the bits for the tree, so the whole lot gets sorted in one go.

The story of Nestlé Smarties Giant Reindeer Tube

The tube with antlers

Plenty of British stockings had a tube of Smarties in them somewhere, usually down by the toe, usually rattling. This one has dressed up as a reindeer, which is only fair at Christmas. You know the drill. Pop the lid, tip a few into your hand and promise yourself you will save the rest. Nobody saves the rest. Then comes the argument about which colour is best, which has never been settled and never will be. It is the old Rowntree's favourite, and a bit of a UK Christmas morning in your hand.

Rowntree's, 1937

Smarties were introduced by Rowntree's in 1937. Rowntree's was the York confectionery firm whose roots go back to a cocoa and chocolate business Henry Isaac Rowntree bought in York in 1862. The same firm gave Britain Kit Kat, which began in 1935 as 'Chocolate Crisp' and is still produced at Nestlé's factory on Haxby Road in York. So Smarties turned up in very good company, two years behind the Chocolate Crisp. The bar only got round to telling everyone to have a break in the late 1950s.

Enter Mackintosh's of Halifax

In 1969 Mackintosh's of Halifax, West Yorkshire, merged with Rowntree's. Mackintosh's was the firm that launched Quality Street in 1936. Yes, that tin, the one passed round after Christmas dinner until somebody gets told off for taking two. Together they became Rowntree Mackintosh. In 1988 Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh, bringing Kit Kat, Quality Street, Smarties, Rolo and Aero into its British portfolio. Not a bad bit of shopping, that.

From Vevey to the stocking

Nestlé itself goes back to Henri Nestlé, a German-born pharmacist who settled in Vevey, Switzerland, and developed an infant food, Farine Lactée, in 1867. The modern company was formed in 1905, when his firm merged with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. It is a long road from there to a reindeer full of Smarties under the tree, but here we all are. If a tube in the stocking was part of every Christmas you grew up with, this is how you keep it going.
