About Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin

About Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin

Have a break, then spend the rest of it arguing about who gets the last finger. The Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin is KitKat dressed for race day, for the person who watches the start with the volume right up.

That snap down the foil is the sound of a tea break in Britain. One crack and you are back on the settee, mug going cold, somebody shouting at the telly on lap three.

The chocolate goes quickly. The tin does not. It will be holding screws in a shed for twenty years.

It is the UK product, and it ships from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin

Q: How big is the tin?

A: It holds 132g of KitKat. Enough to last a race if you are disciplined, which nobody is.

Q: Is it a good gift for an F1 fan?

A: About as good as it gets without buying them a car. The tin does the presentation for you, so there is no wrapping to fight with.

Q: Can I keep the tin afterwards?

A: That is half the point. It ends up holding pens, buttons or spare fuses long after the chocolate has gone.

Q: What do people buy with it?

A: Usually British tea, a few other chocolate bars and some crisps for the long afternoon in front of the race.

More about Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin

KitKat sits right in the middle of British snacking. It is the lunchbox bar, the office biscuit tin regular, the one you snap in half and offer to share, then quietly hope nobody accepts.

People in Canada go looking for this one because they grew up with the British KitKat and know exactly which one they mean. Put it in a Formula 1 tin and you have the obvious answer for the friend who sets an alarm for a race on the other side of the world.

The tin keeps things tidy in the cupboard: somewhere cool and dry, away from the radiator and the race-day crowd. It works as a gift with no wrapping needed, and once it is empty it carries on being useful for years.

It goes well with a box of proper British tea bags, a bag of crisps for the long races and a few other British chocolate bars for the inevitable safety car.

The story of Nestlé KitKat Formula 1 Tin

One finger is a promise

You know the move. Tear the wrapper, snap off one finger, and tell yourself the rest can wait. It cannot. Kit Kat is the British tea break in bar form, the thing that turned up in lunchboxes, on office desks and next to every kettle you ever stood over. Same name you grew up with, still made in York. One finger is a promise. The second one is honesty, and nobody has ever stopped at the second one either.

It started as a Chocolate Crisp

In 1935 Rowntree's of York launched a four-finger wafer bar called Chocolate Crisp. Not the catchiest name ever, and within a couple of years somebody fixed it: Kit Kat. Then, in the late 1950s, came 'Have a break, have a Kit Kat', one of Britain's best-known confectionery catchphrases. You have probably just said it in your head. Everyone does. Kit Kat is still made at Nestlé's factory on Haxby Road in York, which is a pleasing thing to know the next time you snap one.

York, Halifax and a Swiss pharmacist

Rowntree's goes back to 1862, when Henry Isaac Rowntree bought a cocoa and chocolate business in York. In 1969 it merged with Mackintosh's of Halifax, West Yorkshire, the people behind Quality Street, to form Rowntree Mackintosh. Two Yorkshire firms, one very crowded sweet shelf. Nestlé bought the lot in 1988. Nestlé itself began with Henri Nestlé, a German-born pharmacist in Vevey, Switzerland, who developed an infant food called Farine Lactée in 1867.

Mind the rest of the family

That 1988 deal brought Kit Kat into Nestlé's British portfolio alongside Quality Street, Smarties, Rolo and Aero, which reads like the sweet shelf of every corner shop you ever walked past on the way home from school. Smarties arrived from Rowntree's in 1937. Kit Kat is the one that never needed an occasion, just a kettle and ten minutes nobody could take off you.
