About Nestlé Cookie Crisp Cereal

About Nestlé Cookie Crisp Cereal

Biscuits for breakfast, and nobody can say a word, because it says cereal on the box. Nestlé Cookie Crisp is the one you begged for in the supermarket aisle and occasionally won.

Little cookie-shaped pieces, a full bowl of them, with milk poured over the top. It looks like pudding and behaves like breakfast, which is exactly why it got smuggled into the trolley.

The best bit comes at the end: the milk left in the bowl. You drank it straight from the bowl then, and you will now, just with the kitchen door shut.

Frequently asked questions about Nestlé Cookie Crisp Cereal

Q: Is this the UK version of Cookie Crisp?

A: Yes, this is the British box, the one you remember from home. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the box?

A: It is a 375g box. That is a decent run of breakfasts, depending on how many people in your house know where it is hidden.

Q: Does it make a good gift?

A: For anyone who grew up in Britain, a box of the cereal they had as a kid lands rather well. Tuck it into a parcel of other favourites from home and watch them pretend not to be moved.

More about Nestlé Cookie Crisp Cereal

Cookie Crisp belongs to the cheerful end of the British cereal shelf, the boxes kept for weekends, birthdays and mornings when someone else was doing the shopping. Next to the sensible stuff it always looked like it had wandered in from the biscuit aisle.

People in Canada go looking for it because they remember the British box, and the bowl that went with Saturday morning telly. It is a small thing, but small things are what you notice once you have moved a long way away.

This is a 375g box, enough for a good few bowls if you are disciplined and about four if you are not. Fold the bag down, keep it in a dry cupboard and it stays crunchy. Most eat it with cold milk; a fair few eat it by the handful straight from the box, standing up.

Nestlé makes a wide range of British breakfast cereals, and Cookie Crisp tends to go into the basket alongside other weekend favourites from home, plus a bar of chocolate for later, because once you are being nostalgic you might as well commit.

The story of Nestlé Cookie Crisp Cereal

Cookies for breakfast, officially

Cookies for breakfast. You asked for it for years and got told no, and then a box of Nestlé Cookie Crisp landed on the kitchen table and the argument quietly ended. It is the cereal you ate cross-legged in front of the telly, the one that somehow needed a second bowl, and the one where the bottom of the bowl was the best bit. Somebody always put the box back in the cupboard empty. It was never them. The name on the front goes back a lot further than your first bowl.

A pharmacist in Vevey

It starts with Henri Nestlé, a German-born pharmacist who settled in Vevey, Switzerland. In 1867 he developed Farine Lactée, a powdered milk-based infant food. Not cookies, then. Not even close. A pharmacist working out how to feed babies is about as far from a Saturday morning bowl of Cookie Crisp as you can get, and yet there is his name, printed on the box in your hand. Every company starts somewhere sensible. It is what happens afterwards that gets interesting.

Two firms, one name

In 1905 Henri Nestlé's firm merged with the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, and the modern Nestlé company was formed. Powdered infant food on one side, condensed milk on the other. Two firms that knew a great deal about milk, which feels about right for a name that ends up on a breakfast cereal. You do need something to pour over it, after all. From there it is a very long road from a Swiss town to a British kitchen table.

A cupboard full of familiar names

In Britain, that name sits on a lot more than cereal. Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988, bringing Kit Kat, Quality Street, Smarties, Rolo and Aero into its British portfolio. Kit Kat began in 1935 as Rowntree's 'Chocolate Crisp' and is still produced at Nestlé's factory on Haxby Road in York. 'Have a break, have a Kit Kat' dates to the late 1950s, and you just finished it in your head. Same name, same trick: one look at the box and you are back home.
