About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

Frequently asked questions about Bewleys Tea Irish Breakfast

Q: What does Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea taste like?

A: Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea is a strong, full-bodied black tea built for the kind of morning that needs a proper cup rather than a polite one. The blend uses high-grown Assam and Darjeeling teas sourced from India, which gives it a robust, brisk character with the depth you would expect from a serious breakfast tea. It is not delicate, and it is not trying to be.

Q: Where is Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea blended and packed?

A: Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea is blended and freshly packed in Dublin, Ireland, with the tea itself sourced from Assam and Darjeeling in India. For anyone in Canada who grew up with Bewley's as a kitchen staple, that provenance matters. It is the same tea, made the same way, and not a repackaged approximation of it.

Q: How many tea bags are in a box of Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea, and is it worth keeping in stock?

A: Each box contains 80 tea bags, which is a sensible quantity for anyone who drinks tea with any regularity. At roughly two or three cups a day, a box lasts a few weeks without drama. For people in Canada ordering British and Irish groceries online, the 80-bag format means fewer reorders and a consistently stocked cupboard, which is rather the point of a proper breakfast tea.

More about Bewleys Tea Irish Breakfast

Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea sits in a specific corner of the tea world: a full-bodied, malty blend built around Assam and Darjeeling leaves, blended in Ireland to a style that is distinct from the lighter English Breakfast blends more commonly found on Canadian supermarket shelves. It is a proper morning tea, the kind that holds its own with milk and does not disappear the moment you add a splash.

For Irish and British expats in Canada, Bewley's is often the tea they grew up with rather than simply a tea they liked. That makes it genuinely hard to substitute, and it is the sort of thing people search for by name once they realise the local options are not quite the same experience.

This box contains 80 teabags, which makes it a sensible pantry buy rather than a one-cup experiment. It stores easily, takes up little space, and keeps well in a cupboard, so it is worth stocking a box or two at a time.

Bewley's produces a range of teas worth knowing, and if you are building out a proper tea cupboard, the broader Bewley's range in Canada is worth a look alongside the wider British tea and coffee selection available here.

Whether you are in Toronto, Guelph or Halifax, Bewley's Irish Breakfast Tea ships from within Canada, which means no overseas delays and no customs surprises, just a reliable box of tea arriving at the door.
