About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix

About Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix

Strawberry Nesquik is one of those British cupboard staples that does not require much explanation to anyone who grew up with it. The pink tub, the familiar smell when you crack the lid, the slightly optimistic feeling that this glass of milk is now an event. It is a very specific thing, and the UK version is the one people mean when they say they miss it.

Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix comes in a 300g tub, imported from the United Kingdom, and works exactly as it always has. Stir a couple of teaspoons into cold milk and the result is a strawberry milkshake that tastes precisely like it should. No blender required, no complicated steps, no room for disappointment.

For British expats in Canada trying to keep a proper British kitchen going, this is the sort of thing that ends up on the order more or less automatically. The Great British Shop stocks the genuine UK version and ships from within Canada, which means no waiting on a parcel from overseas and no hoping someone remembers to pack it in their suitcase.

The mix is gluten-free and dairy-free, which is worth knowing if you are buying it for a household with those requirements. It also sits alongside the chocolate variety if strawberry is not the only flavour your household has opinions about.

Frequently asked questions about Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix

Q: Is Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix suitable for people avoiding gluten or dairy?

A: The UK version of Nesquik Strawberry Flavoured Milkshake Mix is confirmed as both gluten-free and dairy-free, which makes it a useful option for households with mixed dietary needs. The mix itself contains no milk ingredients, so the dairy comes from whatever milk you stir it into. It may contain soya, so anyone with a soya allergy should bear that in mind.

Q: What does Nesquik Strawberry Milkshake Mix actually taste like?

A: It tastes like strawberry milkshake in the way that most people remember it from childhood, which is to say sweet, familiar, and distinctly its own thing. The colour comes from beetroot red rather than artificial dyes, and the flavouring is natural. It is not a complicated drink. Two teaspoons in a glass of cold milk and it is exactly what it was always going to be.

Q: How many glasses does a 300g tub of Nesquik Strawberry Milkshake Mix make?

A: A 300g tub makes 55 glasses, based on roughly 9g of powder per glass mixed with 200ml of semi-skimmed milk. That sounds like it should last a while, and in theory it should. In practice, a tub tends to move faster than expected once it is in the cupboard and more than one person knows it is there.
