About Quality Street Tub

The lid comes off, the tub goes round, and suddenly everyone in the room is an expert on which ones are worth having.

Quality Street puts eleven sweets in a 550g tub, chocolates and toffees, every one twisted into its own coloured wrapper. The Purple One, the Green Triangle, the Toffee Penny and the rest.

Read more about the Quality Street tub

Quality Street is less a box of chocolates and more a piece of furniture for the season. It turns up on the table, or the floor by the sofa, and stays there until the last wrapper has been picked over and put back. The first pass is all manners. The second pass is not.

Inside the 550g tub, eleven kinds: The Purple One, a whole hazelnut in caramel in milk chocolate, the one that goes first. The Green Triangle, hazelnut praline, still in its green foil. The Toffee Penny, pure toffee with no chocolate at all, and the Toffee Finger, soft toffee in chocolate. The Caramel Swirl, the Strawberry Delight, the Orange Creme and the Orange Chocolate Crunch, which is the orange one with the bite. The Fudge, in pink. The Coconut Eclair, in blue, which has the most loyal following in the tub. And the Milk Choc Block, for the person who wanted that all along.

It is made in Halifax, West Yorkshire, where Harold Mackintosh invented it in 1936, and the lid says so. We sell it from the other Halifax, in Nova Scotia, which pleases us more than it should. This is the UK tub, brought over sealed: the same sweets, the same wrappers, the same argument about the last Green Triangle.

We post it anywhere in Canada. Buy one sealed, exactly as it left the shelf, or buy two, three or four and let us pack them for the post: the empty tubs nested inside each other, every wrapped sweet packed in around them, one box. You tip them back in at home and the coffee table looks the way it used to.

Good questions

Before you pop
the kettle on.

How big is the Quality Street tub?

It is the 550g tub, the big sharing one. Enough for a full family sofa, though not, history suggests, for very long.

Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

Very much so. Hand a British expat a tub of Quality Street and watch them go quiet for a second. It is a Christmas gift that needs no explaining.

What happens to the tub afterwards?

In most British houses it becomes the sewing tin, the button tin or the box of mystery cables. Nobody decided this. It just happens.

Can I mix Quality Street with the other tubs?

No, and it is nothing personal. Quality Street's tub is a different shape, so it nests only with other Quality Street tubs: two, three or four together, packed for the post. Celebrations, Heroes and Roses nest with each other on their own pages.

Is Quality Street still made in Halifax?

Yes, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, where Quality Street began in 1936. Our shop is in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Are the wrappers recyclable?

Quality Street uses paper twist wrappers, with foil for the Green Triangle and Orange Chocolate Crunch. Check your local recycling programme for how to dispose of the wrappers and tub.

Does Quality Street contain nuts?

Yes. The Purple One and the Green Triangle are hazelnut sweets, hazelnuts are in the ingredients, and the pack says all sweets may contain nuts.

Will my chocolates arrive unwrapped?

No. Every chocolate stays in its own wrapper, exactly as it came out of the tub. Packed for the post means we open the tubs, nest the empty tubs inside each other and pack the wrapped chocolates in around them so they fill the gaps. You tip them back into the tubs at home.

Do I still get the tubs and lids?

Yes. Every tub and every lid comes with your order, nested inside each other. The only thing that changes is how much air we post across Canada.

Why is the sealed option more expensive?

Sealed tubs take up more room. Opened and nested packing reduces the space used by the empty tubs. See the purchase options above for prices; shipping is calculated at checkout.

Is this the UK tub?

Yes. The same tub that sits on a British supermarket shelf, imported sealed and sold from our shop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Not a Canadian or American version.

How long does it keep?

Check the best-before date printed on your tub. Store it in a cool, dry place away from heat.

Is it suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, all four tubs say suitable for vegetarians on the pack. None of them is vegan; they all contain milk.

The story of Quality Street

By Aaron A.

Quality Street began in 1936 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Harold Mackintosh brought chocolates and toffees together in a colourful assortment intended to make a box of chocolates a treat more families could afford.

The wrappers are part of the pleasure: a purple parcel, a green triangle, a gold toffee. Picking one is a small decision that can turn into a conversation around the whole table. Chocolate, fruit fondant, caramel and toffee give everyone something different to look for.

Nestlé announced the move to paper twist wrappers in 2022. The Green Triangle and Orange Chocolate Crunch kept their foil. The packaging has changed over the years, but choosing by colour is still part of the ritual.

The Halifax in the brand’s history is in England. Our shop is in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and we import this UK tub for customers in Canada. Choose sealed tubs, or opened and nested tubs with the individually wrapped sweets packed around them. Every tub and lid is included.
