The story of Vimto Bon Bons
The sweet shop jar, remembered
You know these before you have read the bag. Vimto Bon Bons belong to the sweet shop counter, the paper bag, the quarter weighed out while you hovered with your pocket money. They are made for World of Sweets under licence from Nichols plc, the company behind the drink itself. Somebody always leaves one in the bottom of the bag, welded to the corner. It is never them.

A Manchester man and a tonic
The story starts in 1908 at 19 Granby Row, Manchester. John Noel Nichols, born in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1883, was a herb and medicine wholesaler, and that is where he mixed his first batch of a fruit-flavoured cordial. He sold it as a health drink called 'Vim Tonic'. Sensibly, the name got shortened to Vimto. The spot is now marked by an oak sculpture, 'A Monument to Vimto', by Kerry Morrison (1992). A cordial with its own monument. You have to respect that.
A laundry, then the Middle East
By 1927 production had spread into a former laundry building in Old Trafford, Manchester. In 1928 Aujan secured the licence to distribute it in the Middle East, and Vimto gained a major following there. Vimto is now made by Nichols plc, a public company headquartered in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, which reported revenues of £170.7m for the year to 31 December 2023. Not bad for a tonic.
The name gets around
Somewhere along the way the name escaped the bottle. Nichols plc owns the registered Vimto trademark and licenses it out, which is how you get these Bon Bons, and how Swizzels came to make the Vimto Chew Bar. It is the same name you grew up asking for at the corner shop, just in a form you can keep in your coat pocket. Fair warning: the bag will not survive the drive home.
