About Moo Free Selection Box

About Moo Free Selection Box

Christmas morning has rules, and the first one is that the selection box gets opened before breakfast. The Moo Free Selection Box is the one for the job: a little box of bars that belongs in a British stocking.

You open the lid, you line the bars up, and you announce that you are saving one for later. You are not saving one for later.

It is the UK selection box, brought over to Halifax and shipped from within Canada, so the Christmas morning ritual survives the Atlantic intact.

Frequently asked questions about Moo Free Selection Box

Q: How big is the Moo Free Selection Box?

A: It is a 100g box, a proper stocking-sized selection box. It fits in a stocking with room to spare for a satsuma at the bottom.

Q: Is it a good Christmas gift for someone who misses home?

A: It is about as British Christmas as a small box gets. Hand it over on Christmas morning and watch them get very quiet and very nostalgic.

Q: Should I buy one per person?

A: Yes. Sharing a selection box has started more family arguments than the Christmas Day board game, so one each keeps the peace.

More about Moo Free Selection Box

The selection box is a fixture of a British Christmas. An aunt hands one over, a grandparent hides one under the tree, and somehow every child in the house ends up with at least two by lunchtime.

In Canada it is the thing people go looking for in December, usually because a child who has only heard the stories deserves the real Christmas morning, or because a grown adult quietly wants one for themselves. Both are fine reasons.

It is a compact 100g box, small enough to slip into a stocking or sit on top of a pile of presents. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from the radiator, and it will hold out until the big morning. Some people even manage to save it for Boxing Day.

People rarely buy just the one. A box for each cousin is standard, and it tends to land in the basket next to a Christmas pudding, a box of crackers and a tin to pass round the sofa once dinner has been demolished.

The story of Moo Free Selection Box

Chocolate before toast

The selection box gets opened before breakfast on Christmas morning. Nobody ever wrote that rule down, and nobody has ever needed to. You remember it: wrapping paper still all over the floor, one bar already half gone, a parent pretending not to notice. This one comes from Moo Free, a family firm in Holsworthy, Devon, and it slots straight into that scene. A small piece of a British Christmas, for the years when home is a long way off.

They bet the house on it

Mike and Andrea Jessop started out in 2008 making a small number of Easter eggs. People liked them so much that the pair were flooded with requests for an Advent calendar and other products. So they re-mortgaged their house to fund machinery and ingredients, then spent two years perfecting the recipe. Moo Free officially launched in May 2010. The idea behind it was simple and rather lovely: more children getting to join in with Easter eggs and Advent calendars, the same as everyone else.

Next door, then everywhere

Demand kept climbing. In 2014 Moo Free opened a second factory in Holsworthy, right next to the first. Production capacity tripled to supply the US and Chinese markets, the chocolate went out to more than 30 countries, and in 2016 the company won a Queen's Award for Enterprise. Back home, the range has been stocked in over 400 Marks and Spencer stores across the UK. Not bad for a few Easter eggs.

Still the Jessops in charge

For all that, Moo Free is still family-run, still led by Mike and Andrea, and now employs over 60 people in Devon. The factories and head office send zero waste to landfill, which is more than can be said for the average living room by Boxing Day afternoon. As for the box: open it early, guard it well, and expect someone to ask for the last one. It is never theirs to ask for.
