The story of Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding
Somebody undo a button
Christmas dinner has a running order, and the pudding always comes last. Everyone has sworn they are full. Somebody has quietly undone a button. Then it lands on the table and, somehow, a spoon turns up in every hand. The Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding is handmade, by a firm that started life in a Somerset cottage, and it brings that whole scene with it to Christmas in Canada. Who gets the last spoonful is between you and your family.

A cottage called Thursday
Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. Not Monday, not Friday. Thursday. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. Today Thursday Cottage is an independent part of the Tiptree group, and production is based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade. New address. Still done by hand.
Small batches, serious relatives
Thursday Cottage specialises in luxury handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, and each boil still produces only about 100 jars. That is not a factory. That is a kitchen with standards. Its parent, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885, and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. It now holds the warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. Not a bad family to marry into.
The rest of the family
The pudding gets the spotlight at Christmas, but the range is mostly about the jar. There is an Amaretto Butter, sold as a twist on traditional brandy butter and handmade in small batches. There is a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky, and a Strawberry Jam with Champagne, which sounds like a jam that has just come back from a wedding. Small boils, still by hand. A taste of home at Christmas, when home is a long way off.
