The story of Maltesers Mini Gingerbread Reindeers
Never them, apparently
Somebody always finds the last one in the bottom of the stocking. It is never them. A bag of Maltesers at Christmas is one of those small British habits nobody plans and everybody keeps. This one comes from Mars, the same people behind the Teasers you dig for in the Celebrations box, and the Maltesers you hunt for in a packet of Revels, shaking it and hoping. If you grew up with them, you already know. A small taste of home at Christmas, when home is a long way off.

Slough, of all places
Forrest Mars Sr. became estranged from his father, moved to Europe and founded his own Mars company in Slough, England. Not Paris. Not Vienna. Slough. In 1936 he created Maltesers, and they were first sold in 1937. Mars still calls Slough 'the birthplace of Mars chocolate in the UK', and it has invested £190 million in the factory there since 2023. It still makes chocolate for the Mars, Galaxy, Snickers and Maltesers brands. Not bad for a family falling-out.
Energy balls, if you please
The original pitch was 'energy balls', aimed at slimming women. Nobody's nan has ever called them that. These days the slogan is 'The lighter way to enjoy chocolate', which is a polite way of saying the bag empties before you notice. Maltesers turn up all over the world in bags, boxes, tubes and plastic buckets. In 2021 Mars Wrigley UK even worked with Google Cloud on what was billed as the world's first Maltesers cake developed by artificial intelligence. Somewhere, a computer has opinions about chocolate.
The Boxing Day cupboard
Every British Christmas has a cupboard that fills up all through December and empties suspiciously fast once dinner on the 25th is done. The selection boxes go first. The tins are raided by Boxing Day. A little bag of Maltesers is the one somebody swears they never touched, right up until the empty packet turns up behind a sofa cushion. For a British Christmas in Canada, that small crime scene feels exactly like home.
