The story of Galaxy Mixed Miniatures Pouch
The pouch that goes round once
You open it meaning to have one. Then the film gets good, the pouch goes round the sofa, and by the end credits somebody is holding it upside down and blaming the dog. Nobody ever admits to the last one. That is the whole job of a pouch like this, and the name on the front is the one you grew up with. Galaxy comes from Mars, made at the factory in Slough, Berkshire, that Forrest Mars set up in 1932.

An American walks into Slough
Forrest Mars Sr. was the son of American candy maker Frank C. Mars. He moved to Britain and in 1932 started his own company, Mars Limited, in Slough, Berkshire. Not the obvious place to start a chocolate business, but it worked. That factory is the birthplace of the Mars bar, and Galaxy was first manufactured in the United Kingdom in 1960. It is still made there today, alongside the Mars bar, Snickers and Maltesers. Quite the neighbours.
Second place, and fine with it
In 2014 Galaxy was ranked the second-best-selling chocolate bar in the UK, behind only Cadbury Dairy Milk. Every British household has an opinion on that order, usually aired loudly, usually over the last piece. Slough is not resting on it either. The factory employs more than 1,850 people, and Mars is investing £190 million (2023 to 2028) to turn it into a 'next-generation manufacturing hub'. Very serious about chocolate, Slough.
Same family, different name
Galaxy is sold in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, the Middle East, Morocco, India, Pakistan, Australia and Malta, and as Dove in the United States, Canada, Mexico and parts of Continental Europe. The range includes caramel, Ripple, Bubbles and Minstrels, now Galaxy Minstrels, whose 1980s British adverts promised 'The chocolates that melt in your mouth, not in your hand'. The name on the front still matters, though. This one says Galaxy.
