The story of Thursday Cottage Christmas Pudding Boxed
The pudding that finishes the day
Everyone at the table swears they could not eat another thing. Then the pudding comes out, and suddenly there is room. That is a British Christmas in one move, and it is the bit people miss most when home is a long way off. Thursday Cottage make theirs by hand, which is exactly how you want the last course of Christmas dinner to turn up. Nobody remembers the sprouts. Everybody remembers who had seconds of pudding and pretended they had not.

It started in an actual cottage
Thursday Cottage was founded in 1963 in a cottage of that name outside Spaxton, Somerset. Named after the place it started, which is refreshingly honest. For many years the business was owned and run by Hugh and Pam Corbin of Lyme Regis, who sold it in 2002. These days it is an independent part of the Tiptree group, with production based at Trewlands Farm in Tiptree, Essex, where the range is still handmade. Each boil still produces only about 100 jars. Small batches, on purpose.
Rather good company in Tiptree
The parent firm, Wilkin & Sons Ltd, was established in Tiptree, Essex, in 1885 and has held a Royal Warrant for preserves and marmalades continuously since 1911. Today it holds the Royal Warrant as Purveyors of Tiptree Products to King Charles III. So the people behind your pudding have had a warrant for their marmalade since 1911. Not bad going for a jam kitchen.
Then there is the rest of the cupboard
Thursday Cottage mostly makes handmade jams, marmalades and curds for the independent trade, and the range has a sense of humour: a Fine Cut Orange Marmalade with Whisky, a Strawberry Jam with Champagne. There is also an Amaretto Butter, sold as a twist on traditional brandy butter, the sort of thing that sits next to the pudding on Christmas Day and is mysteriously gone by Boxing Day. Nobody ate it. Obviously.
