The story of Reese's Peanut Butter Santas
A Santa you are allowed to bite
Somebody always eats the head first. Somebody else always pretends to be shocked, then does exactly the same. A Reese's Peanut Butter Santa in the stocking is a small act of cheerful violence on Christmas morning, and nobody has ever felt guilty about it. You know the drill: wrapper off, Santa gone, a quick look round to see whose stocking still has one in it. It comes from the people who gave the world the Peanut Butter Cup, and it vanishes just as quickly.

The dairyman in the basement
Harry Burnett Reese was born on May 24, 1879, in York County, Pennsylvania, and his big job had nothing to do with sweets. He managed Hershey's experimental Round Barn dairy until it was shut down for cost-saving in 1919 and he was let go. So in 1923 he founded the H. B. Reese Candy Company in Hershey, Pennsylvania, starting out in the basement of his own home. Not a boardroom. A basement.
One cent, then one thing
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups were introduced on November 15, 1928, and were first called Penny Cups, because they sold for one cent each. In 1942, with wartime rationing and the cups as popular as they were, Reese discontinued all his other candy lines to focus on that one. One product, the whole business behind it. He died on May 16, 1956, and is buried in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, PA, in the same town where he started out.
Two great tastes, one Santa
The Hershey Company acquired the H.B. Reese Candy Company in 1963, and the cups are still made at a large Hershey, Pennsylvania plant said to produce about a quarter of the world's supply. Then there is the famous slogan: 'Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together.' Reese's regularly turns its peanut butter candy into festive shapes, Santas included, which is how one ends up in your hand on the sofa after the Christmas dinner you swore had finished you off.
