About Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs

About Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs

The sweet that glues your teeth together for a full minute, and you still go back for another. Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs: the chewy British sweet with the chocolate hiding in the middle.

They lived at the bottom of your nan's handbag. They came out on long car journeys. They were the reason nobody said a word for the first ten minutes of the film.

This is the UK version, and The Great British Shop ships it from within Canada, so the hunt can stop here.

Go on, have one. Then try saying something sensible.

Frequently asked questions about Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs

Q: Are these the sweets or the cream pastries?

A: The sweets. Chewy on the outside, chocolate in the middle, and no piping bag in sight.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is 120g. Enough to share, in theory.

Q: Do they make a good gift?

A: For anyone who grew up in Britain, very much so. Tuck a pack into a parcel and watch them go quiet.

Q: How do they arrive?

A: We pack them up at the shop in Halifax and post them out to you, wherever you are in the country.

More about Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs

In Britain the chocolate eclair is a corner-shop regular, the kind of sweet that sits by the till between the mints and the fruit chews. Nobody buys them for an occasion. They buy them because it is Tuesday.

Search for chocolate eclairs over here and you mostly get pastry. Lovely pastry, but not what you meant. You wanted the chewy one from the paper bag, the one you remember, and that takes a bit more finding.

The pack is 120g, enough for a long drive or one determined evening on the sofa. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from the radiator, and close it up between raids so they stay properly chewy. They are made for sharing, and they rarely are.

They sit happily alongside the rest of a proper British sweet haul: something sour, something fizzy, a bar from the corner-shop shelf and a pot of tea strong enough to loosen whatever the eclair has stuck together.

The story of Bonds of London Chocolate Eclairs

The one that ends the conversation

You unwrap one, pop it in, and you are out of the conversation for a while. A chocolate eclair is that kind of sweet: the one in your nan's handbag, the one rattling in the car door pocket on a long drive, the one you were told to go easy on for the sake of your fillings. This bag carries the Bonds of London name, a firm the trade press once counted among the UK's oldest sweet businesses. Your fillings are on their own.

An old sweet firm, a new owner

When Bonds of London changed hands in April 2016, it was a multimillion-pound deal. The buyer was Innovative Bites, a US-foods wholesaler founded in 2008 by Vishal Madhu. Not everything changed, mind. Managing director Philip Courtenay-Luck stayed on with the business. That is the sort of steady hand you want when the thing at stake is a nation's supply of sweets.

Jars, bags and the pick'n'mix habit

Vishal Madhu put it simply: Bonds of London has historically been known for traditional British sweets, the pick'n'mix jars and hanging bags. Among its best-known jars are retro classics such as sherbet lemons and wine gums, the sort you pointed at through the glass aged eight. A year after buying Bonds of London, Innovative Bites went on to acquire pick'n'mix wholesaler Hancocks Cash & Carry in a deal worth about £100m. That is a lot of paper bags.

The glovebox regular

Plenty of British families keep a bag of sweets living in the glovebox, and eclairs have always earned their place there. They get passed round on the motorway, offered to whoever is driving, and fished out of a coat pocket weeks later, slightly flattened and eaten regardless. The last one sits unclaimed for days, then vanishes, and nobody saw a thing. Keep a bag in the car and the whole investigation can start again.
