About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Trebor Soft Mints

About Trebor Soft Mints

Trebor Soft Mints are one of those British sweets that barely need an introduction to anyone who grew up in the UK, but for anyone in Canada trying to track down the real thing, here they are: four rolls of the proper soft peppermint sweets, imported from the United Kingdom.

Each pack contains four individually wrapped rolls of Trebor Soft Mints, coming in at roughly 152g to 179g across the four rolls. They are the soft, yielding kind of mint, which matters quite a lot if you have strong feelings about the soft-versus-hard mint question, and most people who buy Trebor do.

The four-roll format is the one people remember from corner shops and newsagent counters, usually bought alongside a newspaper or slipped into a coat pocket. At The Great British Shop, this is the UK version, shipped from Halifax, Nova Scotia, so there is no suitcase required and no vague international aisle to rummage through.

Trebor Soft Mints are suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, which makes them a fairly straightforward option for sharing. The four-pack format also means you can keep one roll handy and quietly guard the other three, which is a perfectly reasonable approach.

More about Trebor Soft Mints

Trebor Soft Mints sit in a specific corner of British confectionery: the roll-format mint, sold individually or in multipacks, that has been a fixture of newsagents, petrol stations and corner shops across the UK for decades. They belong to the same everyday-carry category as Polo mints and Extra Strong Mints, but the soft texture puts them in their own lane entirely.

For Canadians searching for British sweets online, soft mints in the Trebor style are one of the harder things to replicate locally. The format, the texture and the particular intensity of the peppermint are tied to a specific British memory, which is why people in Edmonton and Vancouver end up looking for the imported version rather than settling for something adjacent.

This four-pack format gives you four individually wrapped rolls, running to roughly 152g to 179g across the set. Each roll is the pocket-sized kind, easy to keep in a bag, a desk drawer or a glove compartment. They store well in a cool, dry place and do not need refrigeration, which makes them a sensible thing to order alongside a broader British grocery shop.

Trebor also makes Extra Strong Mints in a similar roll format, so if the household is divided on soft versus firm, there is an answer for both sides. The full Trebor range in Canada is worth a look, or browse the wider British sweets selection for the rest of the order.

The four-pack ships from within Canada, so whether you are in Guelph or Ottawa, there is no overseas parcel delay involved. Suitable for vegetarians and dairy-free, which covers most sharing situations without any fuss.
