About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Frank Cooper’s Vintage Oxford Marmalade

About Frank Cooper’s Vintage Oxford Marmalade

If marmalade is going to be on the toast, it might as well be the one that has been on British breakfast tables for well over a century. Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade is a proper British classic, imported from the United Kingdom and available here in Canada without anyone needing to smuggle a jar across the Atlantic.

This is the 454g jar of the Vintage variety, which means dark, coarse-cut peel, a deep bitter-orange intensity, and the kind of flavour that does not apologise for itself. It is made with Seville oranges and carries that sharp, tangy character that people who grew up with it tend to feel quite strongly about. Spread it thick or thin according to your convictions.

Frank Cooper's has a particular hold on British expats, and it is not hard to understand why. There is something about this specific marmalade that feels non-negotiable at breakfast. The Great British Shop stocks it precisely because some things should not have to be sourced through a vague international aisle or rationed out of a suitcase.

The Vintage Oxford Marmalade is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, and is both gluten-free and nut-free, so it works across a fair range of households. It is made in the United Kingdom, which is exactly what you would hope given the name and the reputation.

Frequently asked questions about Frank Cooper’s Vintage Oxford Marmalade

Q: What does Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade taste like?

A: Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade is bold and dark, built around Seville oranges for a deep, tangy flavour with a bitter edge that sets it apart from sweeter breakfast spreads. The caramelised sugar in the recipe adds a richer, slightly darker note than lighter marmalades tend to have. It is the sort of marmalade that takes toast seriously, and people who grew up with it tend to have strong opinions about settling for anything else.

Q: Is Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade suitable for vegans?

A: Yes, Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It is also gluten-free and nut-free. The ingredients are straightforward: sugar, Seville oranges, water, caramelised sugar, citric acid, concentrated orange juice, sodium citrates, and pectin. Nothing in there that gives anyone reason to pause, which makes it a reliable choice for households with a mix of dietary preferences.

Q: Is this the same Frank Cooper's Oxford Marmalade sold in the UK?

A: Yes, this is the UK-made product, manufactured in the United Kingdom from local and imported ingredients. Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade has a long heritage as a British preserve, and the Vintage variety in particular is known for its darker, more intensely flavoured character. For people in Canada who remember it from British kitchens or hotel breakfast tables, it is the same jar rather than a local approximation.

More about Frank Cooper’s Vintage Oxford Marmalade

Frank Cooper's Vintage Oxford Marmalade sits firmly in the coarse-cut, dark-style end of British marmalade, a category that has its own devoted following quite separate from the lighter, sweeter spreads that dominate most North American breakfast tables. The 454g glass jar is the standard pantry size, and the Vintage variety is the one most associated with the Frank Cooper's name: thick peel, deep colour, and a bitterness that is very much the point.

For British expats and Canadians who spent time in the UK, finding this specific jar matters in a way that a generic orange spread simply cannot satisfy. It is not nostalgia for marmalade in general; it is nostalgia for this one, which is a meaningfully different thing to try to solve at a local supermarket.

Once opened, the jar keeps well refrigerated for up to six weeks, which is a reasonable window for anyone working through it at a sensible breakfast pace. It is gluten-free, nut-free, and suitable for both vegans and vegetarians, so it fits most household cupboards without complication.

Frank Cooper's produces a small but well-regarded range of preserves, and the Vintage Oxford Marmalade is the one that tends to anchor it. More of the Frank Cooper's range available in Canada can be found on the brand page.

The jar ships from within Canada, so whether it is heading to a kitchen in Moncton, Whitby, or London, it arrives without the delays and duties that come with ordering directly from overseas.
