From Plymouth to Cambridge: A Tale of Five Bakeries

Our journey began in Plymouth, United Kingdom, where our family owned and operated a chain of five bakeries. Running those bakeries taught us what makes a real British baked good – fresh dough, proper ingredients, recipes handed down through generations and gave us deep connections within the UK food industry. We didn’t just bake bread and cakes; we supplied restaurants and retailers all over the UK, which meant we learned the ins and outs of wholesale too. That insight into sourcing and quality became the foundation for everything that followed.

British Pride Bakery: A Small Start with Big Dreams

In 2010 we opened the first British Pride Bakery in Cambridge, Ontario. Our “hole‑in‑the‑wall” shop didn’t have flashy signs or a big marketing budget; it had authentic British baking and word‑of‑mouth support from customers who missed the tastes of home. Those early years were tough and it took eight years before we opened our next retail store, but we learned a lesson that still guides us today: focus on quality and let the products speak for themselves.

In 2012 we explored a partnership in Burlington that combined the talents of three companies – a leading importer, Ontario's favourite butcher (more on that later!) and our increasingly popular bakery. We were the creatives behind the business. The British Grocer; Butcher, Grocer, Baker. We designed the logo and it wasn't long until the baked goods were the clear reason customers were coming back time and time again. Unfortunately due to conflicting personalities and goals, the joint venture didn’t last, it did however teach us exactly what we needed to do: be in full control over quality and service so we set our sights on building something better.

Becoming Canada’s Only Independent British Grocer

We continued supplying our baked goods wholesale to British Grocer; Butcher, Grocer, Baker after stepping away from the joint venture. When the business was sold in 2014, the new owners eventually began producing their own baked goods around 2016.

By 2017, customer demand in Burlington had reached a tipping point. The appetite for our baking had become impossible to ignore, and it was clear that the city was ready for something more permanent. Burlington had already embraced our products and opening our second location there became the natural next step. The response was immediate and overwhelming, firmly establishing Burlington as the foundation for our next phase of growth.

The success of Burlington proved that our model could scale. In 2020, we made a bold and defining move: we acquired a much-loved butchery and grocery store in Niagara Falls, which represented one third of our original 2012 vision. At the same time, we launched our own import division. This decision changed everything. For the first time, we were producing, baking and importing 100% of the products on our shelves, a milestone no other British store in Canada could claim.

That independence came at a cost. Major importers immediately cut us off, unwilling to support a business that demonstrated just how achievable direct importing really was. For many retailers, this would have been a death sentence. For us, it was fuel. Confident in our baking, the butchery legacy we had acquired and our deep understanding of the British food market, we pushed forward and thrived.

Our commitment to independent importing didn’t just benefit us, it reshaped the market. When we began importing frozen British staples such as Warburtons bread, Quorn meat-free products, Aunt Bessie’s favourites, and potato waffles, larger importers were forced to follow suit. We were repeatedly told that certain products, including Marks & Spencer, were “impossible” or “not worth importing.” Our long-standing relationships in the UK proved otherwise.

Today, M&S biscuits, Warburtons bread & crumpets and other iconic lines are far more widely available in Canada because we refused to accept limitations. We’ve also introduced more economical ranges, such as Morrisons, helping make British staples accessible to more families across the country. While nothing is truly exclusive, anyone can import from the UK, we have consistently set the benchmark that others are forced to match in order to compete.

Why Halifax? Why Now?

In 2022 we opened The Great British Shop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, our first location outside Ontario. After falling in love with the province, we applied everything we’d learned in Ontario to a new market. Running a small, single storefront has allowed us to focus on perfecting our range and service. Nova Scotia’s tight supply chains challenged us to find new suppliers and in doing so we discovered even higher‑quality meats and produce than we had in Ontario. While we don’t ship our fresh bakery or butchery items, visitors to our Halifax store can taste award‑winning pastries, Cornish pasties and Scotch pies informed by years of experience. For online customers, we ship imported groceries only, chocolates, biscuits, crisps, tea, condiments and more – so they arrive safely at your door.

Shaping the British Food Landscape in Canada

Our independence hasn’t just helped us grow; it has raised the bar for British food in Canada. Because we import and produce everything ourselves, our selection is deeper and fresher than stores that rely on wholesalers. Competitors near our locations have had to reduce prices, offer low dated sales by the case and expand their ranges to keep up. Locations nearby British Pride Bakery locations are often supplemented by the larger wholesalers as ways to dent the growth of Canada's largest independent British store.

What You’ll Find in Our Online Shop

From everyday essentials to hard‑to‑find treats, we stock thousands of items from Britain’s favourite brands. Craving Cadbury Dairy Milk, Galaxy Ripple or Terry’s Chocolate Orange? Longing for the crunch of Walkers crisps, Hula Hoops and Monster Munch? After the perfect dunking biscuit – maybe McVitie’s Digestives, Hobnobs or a Penguin bar? We carry popular beverages like PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea, Ribena and Irn‑Bru, plus pantry staples including Bisto gravy, Branston pickle, Hartley's jam and Marmite. All these imported goodies are packed with care and shipped from Halifax to every province and territory.

Award‑Winning

Across our locations we’ve won dozens of awards – from “Best Bakery” and “Best Chocolate Store” to the prestigious Canadian Choice Award for Best Grocery Store. While we’re honoured by these titles, we’re most proud that they’re decided by customers. We don’t need judges to tell us our pies are good; we listen to you and your votes tell us we’re on the right track. At our Halifax store we’ve been named best bakery, cake shop, grocery store and loads of other "bests" multiple times in just three years, demonstrating how quickly our community has embraced us.

Community & Care at the Heart of What We Do

We’re not a faceless corporation. We’re a small team who believe in giving back. When wildfires ravaged Halifax, we fed firefighters and emergency crews. We donate surplus baked goods to local food banks and run annual fundraisers for Feed Nova Scotia. These are quiet efforts we don’t always advertise, especially our homeless shelter donations. We do them because they’re the right thing to do. Our online customers are part of that community too, we tuck handwritten postcards into orders, rotate note designs to keep things fun and respond personally to emails. Hundreds of five‑star reviews praise our service and our willingness to go the extra mile.

Canada wide Shipping – Flat Rates & Free Shipping Thresholds

Whether you live in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, St. John’s or a small town in the Yukon, we work hard to make getting British groceries as easy and affordable as possible. As our online business continues to grow, so does our ability to negotiate better shipping rates.

When we first launched our online store in March, flat-rate and free-shipping thresholds were available only within Nova Scotia. By May, we were able to extend those rates across most of the Maritimes and by late spring and early summer we successfully introduced flat-rate and free-shipping options into Quebec and Ontario.

This progression is intentional. As our volume increases, we continue to unlock better national shipping rates, allowing us to roll out flat-rate and free-shipping thresholds to more provinces over time. Our goal is to make these options available across all of Canada and we’re actively working towards nationwide flat-rate shipping in 2026.

All orders ship from our Halifax shop within one day and typically arrive within two to seven business days depending on location. Because we ship imported grocery items only (no fresh bakery or meat), parcels travel safely and arrive in excellent condition year-round, even during hot summers and snowy Canadian winters.
