About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Seafood Sauce

About Morrisons Seafood Sauce

Seafood sauce is one of those things that sounds simple until you realise the version you grew up with is not quite the same as anything you can find locally. Morrisons Seafood Sauce is the British prawn cocktail staple that belongs on the side of a prawn marie rose, tucked into a sandwich, or spooned onto a starter without any particular ceremony.

This is the 175g jar from Morrisons, the UK supermarket own-brand that has quietly been getting the balance right for years. That balance being the familiar tangy, slightly sweet, mayonnaise-based sauce that British households have been using for prawn cocktails, fish fingers and cold seafood platters for as long as anyone can remember.

For British expats in Canada, it is one of those small but specific things that the local supermarket aisle does not quite cover. The Great British Shop imports it directly from the UK, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from home or hope someone remembers to pack it in their luggage.

Morrisons Seafood Sauce is suitable for vegetarians and is dairy-free, which makes it a useful all-rounder at the table. It is made in the United Kingdom and arrives here as part of a broader range of Morrisons pantry staples available in Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Seafood Sauce

Q: Is Morrisons Seafood Sauce suitable for vegetarians or people avoiding dairy?

A: Yes, Morrisons Seafood Sauce is suitable for vegetarians and is dairy-free, according to the product's confirmed claims. It does contain egg, mustard and celery, so anyone with those allergies should be aware. Despite the name, there is no fish or shellfish in the ingredients list, which makes it a useful option for vegetarians who want a classic prawn cocktail-style sauce without any seafood in the bottle itself.

Q: What is Morrisons Seafood Sauce and how is it used in British cooking?

A: Morrisons Seafood Sauce is a British-made condiment in the Marie Rose style, the kind of pale pink sauce that has been spooned over prawn cocktails at British dinner parties and pub starters for decades. It is made with rapeseed oil, egg yolk, tomato paste, and a blend of onion, garlic and celery powders. In the UK it turns up alongside cold prawns, in sandwiches, or as a dipping sauce, and it is the sort of thing that feels oddly specific until you actually need it.

Q: Is this the UK version of Morrisons Seafood Sauce, and is it available in Canada?

A: Yes, this is the UK-made Morrisons Seafood Sauce, imported from the United Kingdom and available in the 175g jar. Morrisons is a British supermarket brand, and their own-label condiments are not sold through Canadian supermarkets, which is why people in Canada who grew up with it tend to seek it out through British grocery importers rather than going without or settling for something different.

More about Morrisons Seafood Sauce

Seafood sauce sits in a specific corner of the British condiments world: not quite a salad cream, not quite a plain mayonnaise, but the tangy, lightly sweet sauce that shows up at prawn cocktail starters, fish finger sandwiches and cold buffet spreads across the UK. Morrisons Seafood Sauce is the supermarket own-brand version of that category staple, made in the United Kingdom and imported here without substitution.

For British expats in Mississauga or Toronto, this is the kind of product that does not have a straightforward Canadian equivalent in the emotional sense. The flavour profile is tied to a particular memory of British home cooking, and that is not something a generic pink sauce fills in for.

The 175g jar is a practical size: enough for several servings, compact enough to sit sensibly in the fridge door, and rated best within four weeks of opening. It stores in a cool, dry place before opening, which makes it a reasonable pantry item to keep on hand rather than something that needs immediate use.

Morrisons produces a broad range of own-brand staples, and this sauce fits naturally alongside other Morrisons in Canada products available here. It also slots into the wider world of British pantry favourites that expats and Anglophiles tend to rebuild gradually once they know a reliable source exists.

Shipped from within Canada, it reaches Bedford, Toronto and Mississauga without the uncertainty of an overseas parcel. A small jar, a specific flavour, and one less thing to go without.
