About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Salmon Paste

About Morrisons Salmon Paste

Salmon paste is one of those very specific British things that does not really need explaining to anyone who grew up spreading it onto white bread at their nan's kitchen table. Morrisons Salmon Paste brings that exact experience to Canada, imported from the UK in the compact 75g jar that fits neatly in a cupboard and disappears rather quickly once opened.

This is a ready-to-use fish paste made with salmon, sold in a 75g jar and designed for spreading. The format is straightforward: open the jar, find some bread or crackers, get on with it. It is the kind of thing that requires no ceremony and rewards no overthinking.

For British expats in Canada, fish paste is one of those small pantry items that is quietly difficult to source without knowing where to look. The Great British Shop stocks it alongside a wider range of British grocery imports, so there is no need to wait on a parcel from home or hope a visiting relative remembered to pack it.

Morrisons Salmon Paste is confirmed dairy-free, which is worth knowing if you are shopping for someone with dietary requirements. It is made in the United Kingdom, which means it is the version people actually recognise rather than a near-miss from an international aisle.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Salmon Paste

Q: Is Morrisons Salmon Paste dairy-free?

A: Yes, Morrisons Salmon Paste is dairy-free. It contains salmon (67%), haddock, soya protein concentrate, potato starch, tomato paste, barley malt vinegar, lemon juice and white pepper, with no milk or dairy ingredients. It does contain fish, barley and soya, so it is not suitable for anyone with those allergies. For people avoiding dairy, it is a straightforward sandwich paste with no hidden milk derivatives.

Q: What is Morrisons Salmon Paste and how is it typically used in the UK?

A: Morrisons Salmon Paste is a soft, spreadable fish paste made with 67% salmon, a little haddock, and a gentle seasoning of tomato paste, barley malt vinegar, lemon juice and white pepper. In Britain it is the sort of thing that goes straight onto white bread or crackers without much ceremony, often appearing in packed lunches or alongside a pot of tea. It is a quietly familiar part of the British sandwich cupboard that does not really need explaining to anyone who grew up with it.

Q: Is Morrisons Salmon Paste the UK version, and is it available in Canada?

A: Yes, this is the genuine UK product made in the United Kingdom and imported into Canada. Morrisons fish pastes are not something you tend to find on Canadian supermarket shelves, which is why people who grew up spreading them onto bread in Britain end up hunting for them specifically. The 75g jar is the standard size from the UK, and it is the sort of thing that quietly earns its place in a British grocery order.

More about Morrisons Salmon Paste

Salmon paste sits in a small but well-loved corner of the British grocery world, alongside other fish and meat pastes that have been a staple of the sandwich tin for generations. It belongs to the same category of jarred spreads that British households reach for without much thought, the kind of thing that lives at the back of the cupboard until someone needs a quick lunch.

For British expats across Canada, finding salmon paste is not always straightforward. It does not have a direct equivalent on Canadian supermarket shelves, which makes it one of those quietly missed items that people search for specifically by name, usually after a craving arrives without warning.

The 75g jar is a sensible single-use size. It keeps perfectly well in a cool, dry cupboard before opening, and once opened needs to be refrigerated and used within three days, which is easy enough given how quickly it tends to go. It is confirmed dairy-free, which is a useful detail for anyone managing dietary requirements in the household.

Morrisons produces a range of everyday British grocery staples, and their fish paste sits comfortably within that no-fuss, reliable tradition. You can browse the broader Morrisons in Canada range or explore other British pantry favourites alongside it.

The jar ships from within Canada, so whether someone in Halifax, Waterloo or St. John's is rebuilding a British cupboard or simply after a taste of home, it arrives without the delays of an overseas order.
