About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Honey & Mustard

About Morrisons Honey & Mustard

Honey and mustard is one of those combinations that sounds simple until you find the version you actually like, and then everything else feels slightly wrong. Morrisons Honey & Mustard is the British supermarket staple that a lot of people in Canada find themselves missing more than they expected.

This is a 495g jar of Morrisons own-brand honey and mustard sauce, made in the United Kingdom. It works as a cooking sauce, a dressing, a dip, or something you spoon directly onto chicken and pretend you planned a proper meal. The balance of sweet and sharp is the kind of thing that becomes a fridge fixture without you quite noticing.

For British expats, Morrisons sauces tend to carry a specific kind of familiarity. Not fancy, not fussed about, just reliably good and always there. The Great British Shop imports it from the UK so you are not improvising with something approximate from a Canadian supermarket shelf when this is the one you actually want.

The sauce is suitable for vegetarians, which makes it a useful all-rounder for households that need something that works across the table. At 495g, it is a proper-sized jar rather than something you get through in a single sitting and immediately regret finishing.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Honey & Mustard

Q: What does Morrisons Honey & Mustard sauce taste like?

A: The sauce brings together two types of mustard, English and wholegrain, with honey, single cream and a touch of black pepper, so the overall character is warm, rounded and gently sharp rather than fiery. The wholegrain mustard adds a bit of texture alongside the smoother base. It is the kind of sauce that works well with chicken or as a dip, and it tastes exactly like the jar you remember from a British supermarket shelf.

Q: Is Morrisons Honey & Mustard sauce suitable for vegetarians?

A: Yes, Morrisons Honey & Mustard is suitable for vegetarians. It does contain milk and egg yolk, so it is not suitable for vegans. The allergen list also flags barley and mustard, which is worth noting if either is a concern. The 495g jar is the UK version, imported from the United Kingdom.

Q: Is the Morrisons Honey & Mustard sauce sold in Canada the same UK version you get in British supermarkets?

A: Yes, this is the UK product made in the United Kingdom, the same 495g jar you would find in a Morrisons back home. For British expats in Canada, that matters because honey and mustard sauces vary quite a bit by country, and the specific balance of English mustard, wholegrain mustard and cream in this one is not something you tend to find replicated on a Canadian supermarket shelf. It is the sort of jar people add to a British shop order without much deliberation.

More about Morrisons Honey & Mustard

Morrisons Honey & Mustard sits in a specific corner of the British condiment world: the own-brand supermarket sauce that earns its place not through novelty but through consistent, unfussy usefulness. In the UK it belongs in the same category as the other Morrisons cooking sauces and dressings that fill a fridge door and quietly do a lot of heavy lifting at mealtimes.

For British expats in Canada, honey and mustard sauce is one of those things that turns out to be surprisingly hard to replicate from scratch or substitute with something close. The particular balance of English mustard, wholegrain texture and honey sweetness is tied to a very specific British fridge memory, and that is what tends to bring people searching for it online.

The 495g jar is a practical size, more than a taster but not so large it becomes a commitment. It stores well in the cupboard until opened, then needs refrigerating and using within three days, so it suits regular cooking rather than the occasional splash. It is suitable for vegetarians.

Morrisons produces a broader range of own-brand sauces and condiments, and if you are rebuilding a British pantry from scratch, it is worth browsing the wider Morrisons in Canada range alongside other British pantry favourites to fill the gaps in one go.

The jar ships from within Canada rather than overseas, which means sensible delivery times whether you are in Toronto, Guelph or Halifax. No customs guesswork, no warm-parcel anxiety.
