About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality — flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy — because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left — and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Cranberry Sauce

About Morrisons Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is one of those things that sounds simple until you are standing in a Canadian supermarket in late November wondering why none of the jars look quite right. Morrisons Cranberry Sauce is the British version, made in the UK, and it is available in Canada without any of the usual logistical drama.

This is a 200g jar of classic cranberry sauce, the sort that belongs alongside a proper roast rather than as an afterthought. The format is straightforward and the size is right for a household that takes its Sunday roast seriously, or for anyone building a Christmas plate that needs to taste like the ones they remember.

For British expats, cranberry sauce is not a complicated product, but it is a specific one. The balance, the texture, the way it sits next to turkey or cheese without overwhelming everything else on the plate, these things matter more than they probably should. The Great British Shop carries it as part of a wider range of British pantry goods shipped from Canada, so there is no waiting on a parcel from the UK or hoping a visiting relative remembers to pack it.

Morrisons Cranberry Sauce is suitable for vegans and vegetarians, which makes it a useful jar to have on the table when you are feeding a mixed crowd. It is produced in the United Kingdom and imported, so it is the version people who grew up in Britain will actually recognise.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Cranberry Sauce

Q: Is Morrisons Cranberry Sauce suitable for vegans and vegetarians?

A: Yes, Morrisons Cranberry Sauce is suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. The ingredients are straightforward: cranberries, sugar, water, and a pair of acidity regulators. There is nothing animal-derived in the jar, which makes it a reliable choice for a Christmas table where guests have different dietary requirements and you would rather not have to explain the condiments.

Q: What is in Morrisons Cranberry Sauce and how tart is it?

A: Morrisons Cranberry Sauce is made with 47% cranberries, sugar, water, and citric acid and sodium citrate as acidity regulators. The balance of cranberry and sugar gives it the familiar sweet-sharp character that cranberry sauce is known for, with the acidity regulators keeping the brightness in check. It is the sort of jar that does exactly what it is supposed to do alongside a roast without drawing attention to itself.

Q: Is this Morrisons Cranberry Sauce the UK version?

A: Yes, this is a UK import. Morrisons is a British supermarket chain and this is their own-label cranberry sauce, made to the same recipe sold in their UK stores. For people in Canada who grew up with British supermarket own-label condiments on the Christmas table, that specific jar matters more than it probably should, and it is the sort of thing that ends up in a British shop order alongside the stuffing and the bread sauce.

More about Morrisons Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce sits in a particular corner of the British condiment world: not quite a chutney, not quite a jelly, but essential in a way that only becomes obvious when it is missing. In the UK, it is a year-round pantry staple as much as a Christmas fixture, appearing alongside cold cuts, cheese boards and leftover turkey sandwiches well into January. Morrisons Cranberry Sauce is the supermarket own-label version, made in the United Kingdom and carrying the no-fuss reliability that Morrisons own-label products are known for.

For British expats in Canada, cranberry sauce is one of those quiet gaps. Canadian versions exist, but the British jar is the one that matches the memory, and that is not a small thing when you are trying to reassemble a proper Christmas plate or a Sunday roast from scratch.

The 200g jar is a sensible size: enough for a household roast with a little left over, and easy to store. It keeps well in a cool, dry place before opening, and once opened stays usable for up to four weeks in the fridge, so there is no pressure to finish it in one sitting.

It sits naturally alongside other British pantry favourites, and forms part of a broader range of Morrisons in Canada products available here, from sauces and condiments through to everyday grocery staples.

Whether you are stocking a kitchen in Kingston or putting together a Christmas order in Toronto, the jar ships from within Canada, which means no customs guesswork and no waiting on an overseas parcel.
