About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Stute No Sugar Added Pineapple Jam

About Stute No Sugar Added Pineapple Jam

Strawberry gets all the attention. Pineapple sits quietly at the back of the cupboard, waiting for someone with better taste. Stute Pineapple Jam is for that someone.

It is a proper British jam from Stute, the sort of jar that turns plain toast into something you actually look forward to. Spread it thick on a crumpet, sandwich it into a sponge, or eat it off the spoon when nobody is watching. Everybody does the spoon thing. Nobody admits it.

If you grew up with Stute in the cupboard, you already know. This is the UK jar, and it ships from within Canada, so the toast situation can be sorted without a suitcase.

Frequently asked questions about Stute No Sugar Added Pineapple Jam

Q: How big is the jar?

A: It is a 430g jar. Enough for plenty of toast, and possibly one sponge if you are feeling generous.

Q: Is it a good thing to send as a gift?

A: For someone who grew up with it, very much so. A jar of pineapple jam from home tends to get a bigger reaction than something that cost ten times as much.

Q: What do people eat it with?

A: Hot buttered toast first, scones a close second. It also goes into jam tarts, sponges and the odd spoonful straight from the jar, which nobody will admit to.

More about Stute No Sugar Added Pineapple Jam

Jam sits right at the centre of the British table: on toast at breakfast, in a scone at teatime, in the middle of a Victoria sponge on a Sunday. Strawberry and raspberry do most of the work. Pineapple is the cheerful outlier, the jar that makes someone say "oh, I haven't had that in years".

That is usually why it gets searched for in Canada. Somebody remembers a particular jar in a particular cupboard, a nan's or a mum's, and nothing else quite fills the gap on the toast. Finding the actual one is half the pleasure.

It comes in a 430g jar, which is a proper amount of jam for a household that takes breakfast seriously. It sits happily in the pantry until you open it, then follow the jar for keeping. It is as good stirred into yoghurt or spread in a jam tart as it is on toast.

Stute makes other jams too, and pineapple tends to end up in the basket next to crumpets, a box of British tea and whatever the scones are going to be made from. Breakfast, sorted for the week.
