Quality Street is the tin of wrapped sweets that sits on the coffee table in half the living rooms in Britain, and The Purple One is the sweet everybody goes for first. Nestlé has done the sensible thing and given it a bar of its own.

Plenty of people in Canada remember the colour of the foil before they remember the name. They type "the purple one" into a search box and hope somebody knows what they mean. We do.

It is an 87g bar, so a good deal more than you would ever win from a tin. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard out of the sun, snap off a square with a cup of tea, and wrap the rest back up if your willpower allows. It usually does not.

People tend to pick it up alongside the other British chocolate bars on the shelf, plus a box of proper tea to go with it. One for now, one for later, and one that will mysteriously disappear before later arrives.
