About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Princes Pressed Cod Roe

About Princes Pressed Cod Roe

Nobody under forty knows what this is. Everybody over sixty has firm opinions on how thick to slice it. Princes Pressed Cod Roe is the tin your gran kept at the back of the cupboard for a Saturday fry-up.

Tip it out, slice it, and fry it until the edges go crisp and golden. Add an egg and a slice of toast. Breakfast, supper and a seaside cafΓ©, all on one plate.

Try finding one over here. We did the finding for you: this is the UK tin, shipped from within Canada.

Frequently asked questions about Princes Pressed Cod Roe

Q: How do people actually eat pressed cod roe?

A: Sliced and fried is the classic, usually with eggs, bacon or just buttered toast. Some like it on toast with a squeeze of lemon. Nobody has ever regretted adding brown sauce.

Q: How much is in the tin?

A: It is a 200g tin, which comes out as one solid block. That is two good breakfasts, or one if nobody is watching.

Q: Is it a good thing to send to someone who misses home?

A: It is a cracking one. Anyone who grew up with it will know exactly what it is the moment they see the tin, and they will probably ring you to talk about their gran.

Q: Is Princes a proper British brand?

A: Very much so. Princes is one of the best known names in British tinned food, the sort of label that has sat in UK cupboards for generations.

More about Princes Pressed Cod Roe

Pressed cod roe belongs to the old-school British cupboard, on the shelf next to the pilchards and the corned beef. It is cheap, filling and quietly brilliant once it hits a hot pan. Up north the chippy will batter it for you. At home, it came out of a tin.

People in Canada go looking for it because it is one of those tastes nobody else in the house has heard of. You mention it, you get a blank look, and suddenly you need it on a plate by Sunday morning.

It comes as a solid block in a 200g tin, enough for two decent breakfasts or one greedy one. It sits in the cupboard until you want it. Slice it about a centimetre thick, dust it in flour if that is how your family did it, and fry. Once the tin is open, cover what is left and keep it in the fridge.

Princes is one of the big names in British tinned food, best known for its tinned fish and corned beef. Roe people rarely stop at roe, though. They tend to leave thinking about brown sauce, a tin of beans and a loaf for proper toast.
