Morrisons Whole Rolled Scottish Porridge Oats - 750g

Porridge is the plain, dependable end of the British breakfast. The full fry-up gets Saturday. Porridge gets every wet Tuesday in between, and does not complain. Scottish oats carry a bit of extra weight, because Scotland takes its porridge very seriously indeed.

People go looking for this one because a supermarket own-label bag is part of the furniture of a British kitchen. If your weekly shop was at Morrisons, this went in the trolley without anyone ever writing it on the list.

The 750g bag is a good few weeks of breakfasts for one, rather fewer once the rest of the house works out it is there. Fold the top over, clip it shut and keep it somewhere cool and dry. Cook it on the hob or in the microwave, or turn it into flapjacks and a crumble topping that tastes like school dinners done right.

Morrisons sells the whole British weekly shop, so the oats rarely travel alone. People tend to add a tin of golden syrup for the top, marmalade for the toast that follows, and a box of tea, because porridge without a cuppa is just warm oats.
