Morrisons Whole Baby Beetroot - 340g

Beetroot is the quiet backbone of the British salad plate. Lettuce, tomato, a few rounds of cucumber, a slice of ham, a boiled egg, and a purple puddle slowly creeping towards all of it. For most of Britain, that beetroot comes from a supermarket own-label jar like this one.

People in Canada search for this one by name because it is the one they remember. It is the Saturday salad at your nan's, the tea after a long walk, the plate you were told to finish before there was any pudding. The taste is tied to the table, and the table is a long way off.

This is a 340g jar of whole baby beetroot, small enough to fit in the fridge door once it is open and handy enough to keep in the cupboard until it is needed. Drain it, slice it or leave it whole. Wear something dark.

Morrisons is one of the big four British supermarkets, and its own-brand jars cover the whole salad aisle. Beetroot tends to go in the basket alongside salad cream, pickled onions and a pork pie, if you have any sense.
