About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate

About Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate

Some evenings a cup of tea simply will not do the job. Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate is what the job calls for.

The Best is the Morrisons top shelf, the range you reached for when the week had earned it. This one lived in the cupboard at home, and it never lasted as long as the label suggested.

You do not think about it at all until you are a few thousand miles from the nearest Morrisons. Then you think about it rather a lot.

So here it is, waiting for your favourite mug.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is, the same Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate you would pick up in a British supermarket. We bring it over and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How much is in the pack?

A: 300g of hot chocolate powder. That is a fair run of evenings, depending on how heavy your hand is with the spoon.

Q: Is it a good gift for someone who misses home?

A: Very much so. A Morrisons hot chocolate tends to get a bigger reaction than its size would suggest, usually followed by a story about a kitchen in Yorkshire.

More about Morrisons The Best Hot Chocolate

Morrisons started out on a market stall in Bradford and became one of Britain's big supermarkets. The Best is its top range, and hot chocolate is the drink British homes reach for after a cold walk, a wet match on the touchline or a long day that wants a soft ending.

People in Canada search for this one because they want the mug they remember, not just any mug. The one from their own kitchen, made the way they always made it, usually while somebody asked if there was enough for two. There never quite was.

It comes as a 300g pack of powder, which is a good few evenings' worth if you are disciplined and rather fewer if you are honest. Keep it sealed in a cool, dry cupboard, spoon it into a mug and follow the pack for how much.

It sits well with the rest of a British cupboard: a packet of biscuits for dunking, a box of proper tea for the mornings, and something sweet that nobody admits to finishing.
