About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas

About Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas

Fish and chips without mushy peas is just fish and chips. Fine. Nobody writes home about it.

Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas are the green, spoonable stuff from the corner of every proper chippy tray, the bit that slowly creeps towards your chips while you are busy with the fish. You know the one.

Warm a tin through, dollop it on, and it is Friday night by the seafront again: vinegar in the air, paper going soggy, a gull eyeing up your dinner.

From Morrisons, the Bradford supermarket, so they come from people who take a chippy tea seriously.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is. These are the Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas from Britain, and we ship them from within Canada.

Q: How much is in the tin?

A: 400g, which covers a good few plates of fish and chips. Whether it covers everyone's idea of a fair share is another matter.

Q: How do I serve them?

A: Heat them through in a pan or the microwave and spoon them next to your chips. Pie and peas works too, and gravy on top is entirely your business.

Q: Would they make a good gift?

A: For someone who misses a proper chippy tea, absolutely. Put a tin in with some malt vinegar and watch them go quiet.

More about Morrisons Chip Shop Mushy Peas

Mushy peas are the unofficial third member of the chip shop order. Fish, chips, peas. In plenty of northern towns they also turn up next to a pie, with gravy, and nobody thinks that is odd in the slightest.

You can do a decent fish supper at home in Canada. The batter, the chips, the malt vinegar, all manageable. It is the peas that give the game away, because the taste of these is something you remember rather than something you can make up. So people go looking for the real tin.

It comes in a 400g tin that sits quietly in the cupboard until Friday comes round. Tip it into a pan or a bowl for the microwave, stir, heat through, serve. A household of chip eaters will finish it in one sitting and pretend there was not enough to go round.

People who buy these tend to be building the whole chippy tea: a bottle of malt vinegar, a jar of chip shop curry sauce, gravy granules for the pie crowd. Get the full spread in and nobody leaves the table early.
