About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About Morrisons Beef Casserole Sauce Mix

About Morrisons Beef Casserole Sauce Mix

Rain on the window, a pot in the oven since lunchtime, and nobody in any hurry. That is the evening this packet was made for. Morrisons Beef Casserole Sauce Mix is the shortcut half of Britain swears it never uses.

You brown the beef, chop whatever veg is looking tired in the fridge, stir this in and walk away. A couple of hours later the whole house smells like your mum's kitchen on a school night.

In Britain you never thought about it. It was just there on the shelf, next to the gravy. Then you move, and suddenly you are thinking about it a lot.

Small packet. Big pot. Seconds all round.

Frequently asked questions about Morrisons Beef Casserole Sauce Mix

Q: Is this the UK version?

A: It is, the Morrisons packet from British shelves, and it ships from within Canada. Same mix, same name, same casserole.

Q: How big is it?

A: A 37g packet. Small enough to tuck in a cupboard, enough to turn a pound or so of beef into dinner for the family.

Q: Can I use it in a slow cooker?

A: Plenty of people do. Check the pack for the method, then go and do something else for the afternoon.

Q: Is it any good as a gift?

A: For someone who misses home, a packet of the casserole mix their mum used is a better present than it has any right to be. Pair it with some gravy granules and you have a care parcel.

More about Morrisons Beef Casserole Sauce Mix

Casserole mixes live in the British cupboard somewhere between the gravy granules and the stock cubes: unglamorous, always there, and responsible for more weeknight teas than anyone would admit. This one comes from Morrisons, the supermarket that started on a market stall in Bradford.

People in Canada go looking for it by name because that is what went in the trolley back home. The casserole you grew up with had a particular taste, and you know it the second you lift the lid.

It is a dry mix in a 37g packet, so it sits quietly in the cupboard until a cold evening comes calling. Brown your beef, add your veg, follow the method on the pack, and let the oven or the slow cooker do the rest. Mash or a hunk of bread for the gravy is your business.

It rarely travels alone. It tends to end up in the basket with gravy granules, a bag of Yorkshire puddings and a jar of something pickled, which is basically Sunday sorted.
