About our best-before dates

We work hard to bring proper British groceries to Canada, but importing food across an ocean is not as tidy as stocking a supermarket shelf down the road.

Some products arrive with long dates. Some arrive with shorter ones. Different products come through the import process with different shelf lives, so the dates are not always as neat or predictable as they would be in a regular Canadian supermarket.

Most online grocery shops do not show best-before dates unless something is getting close. We do it differently.

If you were shopping in our Halifax store, you could pick up the product, turn it over, and check the date before buying. We think our online customers should get that same level of transparency.

That is why we show best-before dates clearly on our products.

What "best before" actually means

A best-before date is about quality β€” flavour, texture, freshness, and how the product is expected to be at its best.

It is not the same as a "use by" or expiry date, which only appears on certain regulated foods.

For everyday groceries like chocolate, biscuits, crisps, sweets, tea, sauces, jams, and pantry items, the best-before date is a quality marker, not a safety marker.

Why our dates vary so much

British imports are unpredictable. We do not get to choose every date that arrives in Canada, and different products naturally come with different shelf lives.

A jar of sauce may have months or years on it. A bag of crisps might arrive with a much shorter window and still be completely normal for that type of product.

We check dates, show them clearly, and give you the information before you buy β€” because that is how it should be.

What the colours mean

  • More than 30 days remaining
  • Within 30 days
  • Within 5 days, or past the best-before date

The product page will still show the actual date, so you can decide what works for you.

Why some customers like shorter dates

Many of our regular customers deliberately shop shorter-dated items when the price makes sense.

A chocolate bar with two weeks left is often every bit as good as one with six months left β€” and if we can pass on a saving instead of letting perfectly good food go to waste, everyone wins.

It is not about cutting corners. It is about being clear, fair, and sensible with stock that has travelled a long way to get here.

About McVitie's Gold

About McVitie's Gold

Nobody ever swapped a Gold bar at lunch. It was currency, and it did not leave the hand.

McVitie's Gold is the biscuit bar in the shiny gold wrapper, the one that made a packed lunch worth opening. Crunchy biscuit, golden coating, gone in about four bites if you are being polite.

You forget it exists for years. Then you see that wrapper again and you are nine, sitting on a wall outside school, making it last.

One with a cup of tea. Then possibly another, purely for research.

Frequently asked questions about McVitie's Gold

Q: Is this the UK version of McVitie's Gold?

A: It is, the British one in the gold wrapper you remember. We bring it over to Halifax and ship it from within Canada.

Q: How big is the pack?

A: It is a 124g pack. Enough for a few teatimes, or one very determined afternoon.

Q: Is it good to send as a gift?

A: For someone who grew up with a Gold bar in their lunchbox, it is a small parcel with a big reaction. Pair it with a box of British tea and you have a proper care package.

More about McVitie's Gold

Gold lives in that particular corner of British food: the chocolate biscuit bar. It sits in the lunchbox, the office biscuit drawer and the cupboard at your nan's, the kind of thing that was always just there until, one day, it wasn't.

People in Canada go looking for it because nothing else quite matches the memory of the gold foil. It is a small thing to miss, and that is exactly why it gets missed. You can live without it. You just would rather not.

The pack is 124g, which is enough to share if you are feeling generous and enough to hide if you are not. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from the radiator, and it will happily sit in the cupboard until the kettle goes on. It goes in a lunch bag, next to a mug, or straight from the wrapper at the counter.

McVitie's is the name behind a fair chunk of the British biscuit tin, from Digestives and Hobnobs to Jaffa Cakes and Penguin. Gold tends to end up in the basket alongside a box of proper British tea, because one without the other feels like half a job.
