In Britain, Easter is counted in chocolate eggs, and the shelf in every supermarket fills up weeks before the long weekend. The Mars egg is one of the regulars on that shelf, the one bought for whoever in the family always reaches for a Mars bar first.

In Canada, the search is usually about the name on the foil. If you grew up with a Mars bar in your school bag, Easter Sunday is meant to come with this one, and the hunt for it tends to start well before the garden egg hunt does.

The medium size is the sweet spot: big enough to feel like an occasion, small enough to be gone by Monday if you put your mind to it. Keep it in its box somewhere cool and dry, well away from the radiator and the sunny windowsill, and the shell stays in one piece until someone gets to crack it.
